THE A’20 THAT WASN’T; THE TEAM THAT WAS

The plan was: A’20
+ 20,000+ architects, designers, engineers, constructors, architectural aficionados and celebrities in Los Angeles for three days of keynote speakers, back-to-back seminars, meaningful conversations regarding the profession, networking opportunities, and drinks—simple, old-fashioned human contact.

+ 300 tours to celebrate the fantastic architecture of our city.

+ 20 special events offering entertainment within iconic sites (the Schindler House, the homes of Neutra and Eames to mention a few) with exclusive cocktail receptions, dinners and a one-of-a kind film screening outside, on the lawn of the Eames House–after all, this is Hollywood.

+ a “Smart City” experience with a model of Los Angeles that activated AR and featured the layers composing our new, more sustainable metropolis would have engaged members on the conference floor.

It was, and then as you all know: it wasn’t.

And yet, there is still so much to celebrate about A’20, there is still much that was:

There was the extraordinary support of the stellar Los Angeles architectural community.

We, your local AIA Chapter, asked for help in organizing an unforgettable time for attendees: you (170 stellar AIA members and individuals committed to the built environment) contributed time, resources, experience and ingenuity in creating unforgettable tours, events, logistics, and communications.

Like many of you, we are deeply disappointed that A’20 didn’t come to fruition, but its cancellation can’t change the fact that we were allowed to work with so many of you and to be enriched by your ideas and time.

As staff, we continually are in awe of what Los Angeles members achieve in terms of design, practice and education. Working with committees, we benefit from learning from and serving membership. Producing the framework for A’20 with the vast Los Angeles architectural community allowed us to recognize once again how fortunate those who collaborate with you in the workplace are.

On behalf of the AIA|LA Board of Directors, and the AIA|LA Staff, thank you to all of you who embraced the conference and sponsored the Chapter. We are grateful and deeply touched by your generous support.
