ARCH TOUR FEST: Sargent House and ADU
This project is a new construction house and attached ADU. The programing/siting of building is carefully designed to provide both houses with natural light, privacy and dignity. Main house has a formal entry where you take shoes off (in Japanese it’s called ‘Genkan’ space). The house is both open and very cozy because of the material choices, ceiling height/angles, circulation and views from each space. We believe this is a great model for sensitive luxury home which is modest in size and thoughtfully designed.

Learning Objectives
Analyze how building massing and site placement contribute to privacy, light access, and a sense of dignity for both the primary residence and ADU.
Identify how recent ADU code requirements were implemented to achieve functional and aesthetic integration between the two dwellings.
Evaluate strategies for maximizing natural light and ventilation in a compact residential design.
Assess how material selection enhances spatial warmth, comfort, and design cohesion.
Observe and discuss how lighting design supports both functional needs and the home’s intimate, welcoming atmosphere.
Express the value of multi-generational, or communal living with regard to providing housing and promoting denser living arrangements.
