The 2019 AIA|LA Architectural Photography Awards Jury is composed of: Michael B. Lehrer, FAIA, Laure Joliet, and Matthew Rolston.

A much-awarded architect and renaissance man, a Los Angeles-based female photographer whose work appears in prestigious publications; and a renowned photographer/director/creative director strongly identified with the revival and modern expression of Hollywood glamour—these are the individuals who comprise the 2019 AIA|LA Architectural Photography Awards Jury.

Michael B. Lehrer, FAIA

Michael B. Lehrer, FAIA, founded his practice LEHRER ARCHITECTS LA, in his native Silverlake District of Los Angeles. His work, from the intimate to the monumental, is grounded in the idea that beauty is a rudiment of human dignity. He designs for community with a reverence for light and space. Delight is a matter of extreme gravitas in the work.

For Michael, drawing and photography are tools for daily visual training of the architect’s eye and soul.

Lehrer Architects LA has won over 125 major design and sustainability awards, including over 40 design awards from the national, state, and local chapters of The American Institute of Architects. The Downtown Homeless Drop-In Center (over 3 million visits in its 13-year run as a drop-in center), The Lehrer Architects Design Studio and the LA County Elections Operations Center have all won the Institute Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects, the top annual award for architecture in the United States. The Water and Life Museum in Hemet was the first LEED Platinum Museum in the world.

He leads his practice with his partner, Nerin Kadribegovic, AIA and Roberto Sheinberg, CAM, Director of Design, and an extremely talented group of senior architects and designers.

Educated at Berkeley and Harvard, Michael is President Emeritus of the Alumni Council of the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD), Homeless Health Care Los Angeles, and the American Institute of Architects, Los Angeles. As President of AIA|LA, he founded its annual, ongoing Legislative Day which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year; and he initiated the AIA|LA push to make GREAT STREETS a central initiative in our city. He was Vice Chairman of School Construction Bond Oversight Committee for over 5 years, overseeing (a now) $27 Billion repair and construction program for the LA Unified School District.

Laure Joliet

Laure Joliet is a Los Angeles-based photographer with an eye for living things and lived-in spaces. Even when published in prestigious outlets like The New York Times, T Magazine, Domino Magazine, Wall Street Journal, Anthology, or Freunde von Freunden, her images are intimate, inviting, and unpretentious—they immediately convey the fundamental magic of spaces lit mostly by the sun.

Her interiors, shot with an architectural attention to detail that belies the softness of their effect, can be seen in range of national and international design journals, and are coveted by client list that includes iTunes, West Elm, Target, The Ace Hotel and Barbara Bestor. Joliet grew up between Los Angeles and France, and studied at both CalArts and the Ecole des Beaux Arts; the resulting balance of continental sensibilities and West Coast cool is clear in her work. Matthew Rolston

Renowned for his influential lighting techniques and unique approach to art direction and design, photographer/director/creative director Matthew Rolston has been strongly identified throughout his career with the revival and modern expression of Hollywood glamour. Rolston was “discovered” by Andy Warhol for Warhol’s groundbreaking Interview magazine, where he began a successful career in photography. Soon after, he began shooting covers and unique editorial assignments for influential magazines such as Rolling Stone, Harper’s BazaarVogue, Vanity Fair, W, GQ, Esquire, and The New York Times Magazine. Extending his vision into the moving image, Rolston then began conceiving, writing and directing music videos and television commercials for such diverse clients as Madonna, Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé Knowles, L’Oreal, Revlon, Esteé Lauder, Clairol, Pantene, Gap, and Polo Ralph Lauren, among many others. Rolston now works in other areas including fine arts, experiential design (including hospitality), product design and new media ventures.
