Decarbonization & Reuse

What role does maintaining our existing built environment play in global and local sustainability goals? In addition to material innovation, how might the design industry adapt and emphasize the preservation and maintenance of existing resources in order to meet societal goals?

Through this joint AIA|LA + SEAOSC venture, we will explore different strategies for reducing the carbon footprint of buildings through the lens of reuse. Speakers will cover the inherent responsibility that falls on design professionals as specifiers to assess and quantify embodied carbon, consider design for adaptability and deconstruction, and work to address current industry hurdles. Case studies and examples will be presented to share practical advice for implementing sustainable practices.

Join us and network with fellow architects, builders, engineers, and industry professionals and stay at the forefront of the industry transition as we move to decarbonize and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Presenters:

Luke Lombardi, P.E.Senior Sustainability Consultant, Buro Happold

Luke Lombardi is a bridge-person for sustainability in the built environment. Luke’s background as a structural engineer is central to his understanding of materials and construction practices. Luke has become an emerging leader in embodied carbon through actively participating in the SE 2050 program as the Program Mechanics lead and co-leading the local Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF) Hub in Los Angeles since its inception in 2020. As a member of the Buro Happold sustainability team, he conducts life cycle assessment studies and consults to mitigate embodied carbon emissions. He hopes to maximize the potential of both new and existing buildings through innovative design strategies and principles of circularity to specification review and mindful material procurement.

Peter Rindelaub, Architect, LEED AP – Director, Omgivning

Downtown Los Angeles has been a draw for Peter since his move to the city in 2007. The renaissance of historic buildings here has offered an excellent platform for combining his design interests with his construction expertise. At Omgivning, Peter has led a number of project teams on high profile adaptive re-use and renovation projects. Peter is a leader for sustainable design endeavors at Omgivning and advocates for the adaptive re-use of existing buildings as a contribution to positive, sustainable solutions for our cities.
