KeltnerCo’s Camelot Kids Child Development Center Tour

Designed By: Design Architect, KeltnerCo Architecture & Design, Executive Architect, Ecotech Design

Although they may not know it, the one to two year olds that frequent Camelot Kid’s Little Knights Center are experiencing something rare for a “Parent and Me” center, an award-winning architectural project.  While many of these youngsters have yet to speak, there is no doubt that their minds and attitudes brighten when walking through the doors of this space.  Built for Camelot Kids Child Development Center in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Silverlake, color and pattern were the architectural drivers of the education center for parents, and their young children.  The owners of Camelot Kids, Renae Plant and Livinio Stuyck, wanted a place where parents with very young children could come and take a class in aerobics, fitness, or music, while providing a safe place for the youngsters to play within view.  This extension of the Camelot Kids CDC is now called Little Knights LA.

Starting within the “Womb Room” a Pink to Yellow Ombré stretches to the playground creating a ribbon of color symbolizing the development from infant to toddler.  The color and pattern fill the space with excitement and happiness while architectural forms separate the function of the adjacent rooms.

At the earliest stages of Childhood Development color and contrast stimulate the nervous system.  Aluminum and cement board panels are painted a bright white over an Olive green background adding to the contrast of the facade.  The battens  are arranged in a random pattern and each color was laid out together with the Architect and client.
