Sidecar is a rapidly expanding retail operation based in Southern California that sells freshly made doughnuts and coffee. The business started in 2012 with a store in Costa Mesa, and has since grown to six more locations, with several more on the way. Fleetwood Fernandez was commissioned with a store in 2018, and has since continued to partner with Sidecar as the architect for their growing business. That first store designed by Fleetwood Fernandez won an AIA LA Restaurant Award, and it became the building block for establishing a common aesthetic for subsequent locations. FF has been working with the Sidecar team to develop a consistent look for the stores that is aligned with the values and mission of their brand, while tasked with remaining creative to give each location a unique look. This presentation will include a review of previously completed Sidecar projects as well as ones currently under construction, to showcase the evolution of the architectural identity of the brand, as well as operational factors that influence each location.
