Design commissions for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County include an expansion and re-imagination of the North Campus that includes a redesigned front façade with an entry bridge, pedestrian-friendly terraces and communal areas, and a two-level car park, and proposes a series of glass pavilions housing a live butterfly collection, museum shop and ticket office, museum café, and outdoor dining. A 3.5-acre landscape program provides gardens and outdoor learning environments. Modernization efforts began in 2006 with the renovation and seismic upgrade of the iconic 1913 Building – the first phase of an institution-wide metamorphosis (including the roll–out of major new exhibitions) leading up to the museum’s 2013 centennial.          Read More

Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) Facilities Development Division (FDD) is responsible for enforcing building standards, per the California Building Standards Code, as they relate to health facilities construction. FDD reviews and inspects health facility construction projects. Part of the review process requires the review of all plans, specifications and supporting documentation to ensure compliance with applicable codes and regulations. Historically, reviews are manually completed on printed blue prints which must be shipped to and from design firms. These plans can be thousands of pages weighing hundreds or even thousands of pounds. This costs the facilities almost $1.00 per sheet for each printing and costs OSHPD about $150,000 annually in shipping costs. FDD has a 60/30/30 turnaround goal program requiring first review of New Projects and Deferred Items within 60 days, review of Back-checks within 30 days and Amended Construction Documents within 30 days.          Read More

Located on a prominent block in downtown Los Angeles, the New United States Courthouse’s design has a strong civic presence rooted in classic principles driven by environmental performance and sustainable strategies. The courthouse’s design optimizes the potential of natural light through the integration of a high-performance, pleated glass façade, spatial and programmatic organization and advanced technology. Targeting LEED Platinum certification and the GSA’s 2020 energy target of 35K/BTU/GSF annual consumption, sustainability is evident in every aspect of the project, from the drought-tolerant landscaping of its plaza to the rooftop photovoltaic array that is expected to generate 500,000 kWh annually.          Read More

Similar to all of (fer) Studio's projects, the design of the house evolved through an intensive on going collaborative exchange of ideas and directions with the client. The most important design request the client required was a home with a lot of natural light. We wanted to achieve a flood of natural light through the center of the home so the design solution was a linear split (continuous linear skylight) spanning through the length of it. This prompted offsetting the second floor circulation from the first floor creating a continuous two-story volume of open space, naturally lit from above. This split became a central organizational spine, a main feature to the project. It naturally tracks the suns east/west path throughout the day, providing an ever changing sequence of daylighting experiences, as well as defining the main circulation route within.          Read More

Los Angeles has evolved into a creative, productive, world-class city. Yet, currently, LA is experiencing a severe housing shortage, and has become one of the least affordable places to live. As a consequence, over 44,000 people in the Los Angeles County sleep nightly without shelter.
Since the delivery of shelter as a fundamental human need is literally embedded in the architecture profession’s DNA, now, more than ever before, is the time for architects and designers to come together to explore the problem in depth and identify strong, workable solutions to solving our housing crisis.          Read More

Nestled in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, the private residence of architect Dan Brunn, AIA, became an expression of his signature style. The house was transformed from a typical 1950s Los Angeles bungalow into a minimalist retreat. The remodeling process delicately balanced a nostalgic façade while transforming the interior spaces to accommodate present-day domestic activities with a clean, open-air feeling. Brunn’s design aesthetic is evident in his utilization of provocative spatial choreography and harmonious connections between light and volume.          Read More

The panelists discuss next steps for transforming Downtown Los Angeles into one of the world's best places to live -- and a 21st-century urban destination. Downtown Los Angeles (a.k.a. DTLA) is on the verge of a breakthrough moment. It is becoming more livable, walkable and enjoyable as we speak. But what's missing? A multidisciplinary panel at the A+D Museum examines the promise of DTLA almost a decade after the museum's seminal show Enlightened Development asked the question, How do we foster a "sustainable downtown revitalization"? What should Los Angeles learn from other cities where a similar downtown renaissance has taken place?          Read More

Water is life, and its sustained delivery comes at an increasing financial and environmental cost. The best way to conserve water is to use it twice. Greywater is lightly-used water from bathing and laundry that can be recaptured and used a second time for landscape irrigation. This saves water, saves money, reduces your carbon footprint, preserves remote aquatic ecosystems, reduces load on sewer and septic systems, protects the bay, and is now perfectly legal. This seminar will provide an overview of Greywater: what it is, how it works, and how to incorporate it into your projects.          Read More

Morgan Phoa Library/Residence was a rare opportunity to restore and build onto a historical property designed by Wallace Neff in the 1920s. Work included the interior renovation of the family room, a carefully designed palette of hardscape, a pool addition and a new two-story garage and private library featuring a metal screen façade. The screens, made of bronze anodized aluminum, were water jet cut for precise and patterned variable apertures, referencing the original home’s precast concrete window grills. The screens open like shutters for clear views of the property, and when shut, allow for privacy, sun shading and environmental control.

Although restrooms have been around forever and the new ADA Standards for over a couple of years, we still have facilities with restrooms that are not completely compliant. The major question is, why? Is it designer? Builder? Or is it an on- going maintenance issue? Each component within a restroom has a myriad of requirements needing to fit together like a puzzle. We will take an in-depth look at the technical Access requirements and how it impacts restroom design, whether single or multi-accommodation.          Read More

In this day and age we are not only pedestrians but we are also closely tied to vehicular transportation. And of course there are a myriad of requirements for this as well, starting from the point where we are transitioning from passengers to pedestrians. Whether it is for parking, passenger drop-off, valet service, or transportation such as taxis, buses, or shuttles there are differing requirements for space and slopes, all or which is required to connect with an accessible route. We will review the requirements for each of these types of vehicular to pedestrian transitions.          Read More

For someone who has a disability or is elderly, ascending or descending across levels is a key mobility challenge. We often address this by providing an element such as a ramp or elevator that takes people from one level to another but often these features alone do not solve the problem. We will look at options such as sloped walkways, curb ramps, pe- destrian ramps, elevators, and lifts. We will also examine the parameters and requirements for each of these elements, as well as how to design and situate them for optimum access.          Read More

Hotels, motels, inns, and restaurants are one of the more involved building types. Not only do guest rooms have a myr- iad of parameters but there are a number of other diverse elements, each with their own set of requirements found within one facility. It is not atypical to find retail and restaurants, pools and fitness rooms, business and banquet facilities not to mention valet service and hotel shuttles for even more complexity. Once you step thru the door into the interior of a building you encounter a countless number of different elements, each with its own parameters, and all are connected by an accessible route. There are requirements not only for the item itself but also how it relates to the facility as a whole. Whether we are talking about furniture or cabinetry, drinking fountains or sinks, machines or telephones, restaurant or assembly seating, they are all overlaid with their own requirements relat- ing to reach ranges, clear floor space, and operating force. We will review a number of these elements regarding their technical and scoping requirements to better increase our language and understanding for accessible design.          Read More

Accessible Routes or Path of Travel in new and existing projects are essential aspects of Accessible design. If you can not even get to an area, no matter how accessible that portion is, it will still not be accessible...at least until we invent tele- portation. Not only is the route or path required to be accessible but there are many elements that are included within the definition which also are required to be accessible. We will look at a broad view of these elements, as one progresses from the street, thru the site, and into the buildings, touching on their various accessibility requirements.          Read More

Filmmakers and architects share the capacity to set stories in place. While filmmakers seek locations to unfold narratives, architects design buildings to support narratives. Los Angeles provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on this reciprocal relationship to the city. Through its robust film industry, the city of Los Angeles has demonstrated the capacity to transform its character from highly specific to virtually anonymous. Los Angeles demonstrates the many, diverse global contexts in which architects work. This event will feature architects, filmmakers, and authors/educators reflecting on their creative work as they set spaces for narratives in the city.          Read More

In 2005 the City of Los Angeles created the Small Lot Ordinance to meet the growing need for new housing and lower the barrier to home ownership in the city. By introducing compact single-family housing types on smaller-sized lots, the Ordinance was intended to encourage moderate residential density as a strategy for infill development based on smart growth principles. Now, nearly a decade later, what are the results of the Ordinance, and has it met its goals? What has worked and where does some of the work remain to reach these goals?          Read More
