Since its inception, the UC San Diego Hillcrest Redevelopment Phase One project has been faced with a challenging site, a demanding scope and a fixed budget. The project team will share insight into the design and the role it plays in the overall Master Plan for the UCSD Hillcrest Campus, as well as how a common mission and values have factored into early successes and a solid foundation for the future as they embark on construction.

Presenters:
Barbara Anderson, Interim Director, Healthcare Project Management, UC San Diego Capital Program Management

Danielle Simpson, Associate Principal, CRTKL
Danielle is the project director and Senior Project Architect/Project Manager for the Hillcrest project. Bringing over 15 years of Healthcare experience, she also brings with her large project experience and an aptitude for thriving in the complex. Having successfully led an international start-up office while overseeing multiple complex projects, Danielle has delivered projects ranging from small renovations to large-scale new-builds. Danielle’s passion lies in cultivating high-performance teams– challenging the status quo to find ways to work smarter and leaner, while performing as “one”.

Jacky Yung, Associate Principal, CRTKL
Jacky is the principal-in-charge for CRTKL’s LA Healthcare group and Design Lead for the Hillcrest project. He believes that form follows function, and that great design and function can be achieved within the budget. Jacky has over 28 years of healthcare planning and design experience, coupled with a finesse for working seamlessly with others. Jacky is known for his ability to manage and deliver elegant designs, despite constraints; his breadth and depth of knowledge on planning, code, constructability, cost and healthcare operations lead to informed creative solutions.

Mohamed (Mo) Abdelghafar, Associate, CRTKL
17-year veteran of CRTKL, Mohamed (Mo) got his start in the London office before relocating to the States. A member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Mo brings a multi-faceted background of Retail and Entertainment, Hospitality, Workplace and Residential to the Healthcare practice area. Mo’s diverse background equips him with a unique skillset and understanding of what it means to create timeless designs that promote wellness and spark joy. Mo now works closely with Jacky Yung as a lead designer for the Hillcrest project and in CRTKL LA’s Healthcare group.

Ian Pyka, Project Executive, DPR Construction
Ian is the construction lead for the Hillcrest Project. He brings with him 22 years of construction experience with DPR and he has been integrated with this project’s design/owner team since the onset of schematic design in early 2019.

Learning Objectives:
+ Participants will learn about master planning for the future within an existing campus.
+ Participants will learn about building siting and orientation within a tight site.
+ Participants will learn target value design with design team and builder.
+ Participants will learn how to build a high performing team.
