Redesigning HealthCare in the age of COVID-19: The Sharp Chula Vista Story

Sharp HealthCare is one of only five healthcare organizations in the country, and the only one in California, to have been awarded the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest Presidential honor for quality and organizational performance excellence. The Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center Team will share how they modified their new bed tower and its sixth-floor shell, which was planned and designed to meet High Reliability Organization (HRO) standards, to address the COVID-19  crisis so soon after opening.

Learning Objectives:

+ Plan the design of the existing spaces to address issues posed by COVID-19

+ Explain how operational and infection control strategies can be adapted to mitigate COVID-19

+ Identify adaptable design solutions for progressive care patient rooms

+ Apply lessons-learned to future healthcare design and operations to promote pandemic-resiliency

Moderator:

Annie Chiang, Project Architect,  SmithGroup

Project Architect at SmithGroup, Annie Chiang is a vital design team member of the Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center Ocean View Tower and subsequent renovations of the existing hospital. Her experience has ranged from early programming and planning to delivery and construction administration for various scales of healthcare facilities in Southern California.

Panelists:

Christine Basiliere, Vice President & CNO, Sharp HealthCare

An accomplished hospital and nursing executive for over 25 years, Christine Basiliere has led multiple patient care departments at Sharp HealthCare.  By closely aligning nursing practice to innovation and the aims of quality, access, and costs underpinning Sharp HealthCare’s mission, she consistently elevates the voice and value of the nursing and care delivery teams.  Recognized for her professional leadership with the “Distinguished Woman of the Year” award by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzales of the 80th district of California, Christine’s background includes extensive work in clinical informatics, medication safety, advancing the evidence-based practice agenda, and redesigning operational processes to transform the healthcare experience for patients and providers.

Matt Teichner, Senior Project Manager| Facilities Management and Development, Sharp Healthcare

A senior project manager for Sharp Healthcare, Matthew Teichner led the delivery of the 200,000 SF Ocean View Tower at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center in 2019.  Other notable projects for Sharp Healthcare include Bonita view Hospice House and the development of an Outpatient Pavilion at Sharp Coronado.  Matthew is a licensed Architect who has worked large hospital projects all over the West Coast and for many health systems in the San Diego community.  He is a certified Design Build Professional and volunteer safety assessment worker for the California Office of Emergency Management.

Joon Kim, Senior Medical Planner, SmithGroup

Brief Bio: An architect and medical planner at SmithGroup with over two decades of experience, Joon Kim leads programming, planning, and design for multiple major healthcare campuses and healthcare facilities in California. A key medical planner for the Ocean View Tower Project, Joon led stakeholder and user meetings for initial visioning, functional and space programming, and coordinated interior and exterior design to ensure intention continuity.
