AIALA Committee: Healthcare

CES Learning Units: 1 LU/HSW

Healthcare facilities present a variety of unique challenges from a fire/life safety perspective, resulting from their inherent function and operations, the need to protect patients who are incapable of self-preservation, and design complexity. With the development of building and fire codes combined with the increasing complexity and demands of healthcare projects and project delivery makes the fire and life safety code compliance approach a critical aspect of any project. There are commonly encountered fire/life safety issues that arise on projects that pose challenges in the design or construction phases of a project if not properly addressed and coordinated. The presenters will highlight several of these key issues and summarize lessons learned from past projects.

The 2022 California Building Code will become effective on January 1, 2023. Code changes that may impact healthcare design (related to fire/life safety) will be described in this presentation. The HCAI Chief FLSO will also provide a brief update from HCAI.
