Designing Safer Schools #2

Roundtable Workshop Emphasizing School Community

UPDATE: We are cancelling this event due to the Malibu wildfires and will discuss a new date to announce after they are under control. The date will most likely be in January 2019. Our thoughts are with Santa Monica Malibu USD and their community as they struggle through this natural disaster.
-Will Wright.
A NEW DATE WILL BE CONFIRMED ASAP.
A roundtable workshop (with a pizza dinner) facilitated by Michael T. Pinto, AIA – Principal, NAC Architecture , Mariana Lavezzo, LEED AP – K12 Educational Designer, Associate and Anton Blewett – K12 Educational Designer, of DLR Group; Richard Berliner, AIA, LEED AP – Principal and Ashley Johnson, Associate Designer of Berliner Architects; and Michael Niola, Associate Principal and Michael Dannenberg, Associate Principal – Director of New & Emerging Technologies of Vantage Technology Group Consulting.

Following our August 23rd conversation at the Designing Safer Schools Panel discussion, this round table workshop is intended to bring together school communities (school administrators, educators, parents, and students) to get their input on how to make schools safer while supporting contemporary education practices.  The event will kick off with a brief presentation by Santa Monica Malibu USD administrators sharing their new security pilot project at Franklin Elementary School in Santa Monica and John Adams Middle School’s new security features.  The goal is to work towards a set of recommendations to submit to the AIA at the national level and to governmental organizations to illustrate ways that school environments for contemporary education can be developed and/or modernized to reduce the incidence of crime and daily threats.

Areas of conversation will include expanding research, forming coalitions with governmental organizations, academic environment, physical environment, community environment, cultural responsiveness, health and well-being and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). Members of the Architecture for Learning Environment’s (A4LE) Task Force for Designing Safer Schools and the AIA Committee for Architecture for Education’s (CAE) school safety initiative advocacy task-force will also be invited to facilitate discussions.

We will be meeting in the library at John Adams Middle School in Santa Monica.

PARKING INFO:  Parking will be available at John Adams Middle School, 2425 16th st., Santa Monica CA at the lot at the corner of 16th and Ocean park, available street parking (read the signs) and across 16th street from the school in the Will Rogers Elementary School parking lot.

“Created in the wake of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in partnership with LAUSD, this panel will hear from all our stakeholders—including students, parents, teachers, administrators—along with experts in a variety of fields to fashion recommendations about improving safety on campus and in surrounding neighborhoods.” – Mike Feuer, L.A. City Attorney
