Toyota Gemba Walk

The Toyota Production System (Lean) is a philosophy and comprehensive array of tools that is transforming healthcare delivery and deeply impacting the design and construction industry. Lean offers a way to build high performance teams that are consistently able to greater outcomes with fewer resources. In healthcare design this has led to team collaboration spaces in the care environment, planning around universal platforms and supply chain changes. In design and construction, Lean is arguably the most reliable method of achieving integration and collaboration in a team and has produced some extraordinary project outcomes.

This tour will provide an overview of Lean principles followed by a walk of the production line to see these principles in action. We will conclude with a Q&A discussion focused on understanding what we observed and how it can be applied to Design and Construction. The AIA is hosting this tour in partnership with the Lean Construction Institute.

PRESENTATION LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understand at a high level lean principles and tools
  2. Understand differences between Lean and traditional operating systems
  3. Directly observe Lean principles and tools in action in the organization that developed them
  4. Discuss the use of the Lean operating system in the design and construction industry
