Designing Housing for Accessibility and Inclusion

A virtual event on Zoom.

REGISTER HERE.

The Housing Design Standards for Accessibility and Inclusion define a set of multifamily housing design and operations strategies. Co-created by advocates, developers, and architects, the elements support cross-disability accessibility and link disability-forward design choices to intersectional benefits around affordability, sustainability, racial equity, and safety. Development teams can use the Design Standards to plan and design their projects, then self-certify their communities on their level of access and inclusion.

Learning Objectives

– What are The Kelsey’s Design Standards?
– How did they come to be?
– Why are Accessibility and Inclusion important to design / development?
– How can I (or my firm) engage with the standards?

BIOGRAPHIES:

Erick Mikiten, AIAThe Art of Access and Mikiten Architecture

As a wheelchair-riding architect and Governor Brown-appointed member of the California Building Standards Commission, Erick Mikiten brings unique insights and a lifetime of expertise in Universal Design to every project we do. Building codes and the Americans with Disabilities Act are what most architects use as their gold standard; for his firm, those reference standards are a bare minimum starting place.

She dreams of a day when affordable, accessible and inclusive housing is a given for any new developments.
