Case Study: New Student Precinct, University of Melbourne

This is a virtual event. Zoom log-in information will be emailed to registrants 24 hours in advance.

In this AIALA series, Nathan Bishop, Principal at KoningEizenberg and Samuel Hunter, Principal at Lyons Architecture will present an in-depth view of the New Student Precinct, University of Melbourne.

A collaborative planning effort with Australian Lyons Architecture and others, offers a new focus for campus life. Work includes improvements to eight existing buildings, some historic, and the addition of two new buildings. The 225,000sf project will improve student life for the University’s 60,000+ students who predominantly live off-campus. Each firm takes responsibility for the design of a portion of the project. KoningEizenberg’s design for the Student Pavilion will be the Precinct’s neighborhood hangout. The program includes indoor/outdoor dining, study space, event/meeting areas and a recreational library. This informal social program and sustainable agenda sets its architectural expression.

Presenters:

Nathan Bishop, AIA, Lead AP, Principal, KoningEizenberg Architects

Nathan joined the firm in 2005, and became a Principal in 2011. Drawing on exceptional visualization and communication skills to quickly extract the unrecognized potential of complex urban contexts through strategy and form, Nathan has expanded the firm’s design capacity and integrated new technologies into design and practice. He teaches and lectures in design, architectural history and theory, and cultural studies, and has served on the Board of Directors for the LA Forum for Art and Architecture.

Samuel Hunter, Principal at Lyons Architecture

Sam Hunter is a Principal and Design Architect at Lyons with an interest in the cultural value inherent in all public architectures regardless of their scale or function. Sam brings skills in urban, architectural, and interior design which are informed greatly by the Lyons’ discursive design approach, an approach that brings together a range of ideas to our projects, including cultural engagement, the visual world, and research about the city. Over the last decade, Sam has worked on several of Lyons’ key projects, including the Swanston Academic Building for RMIT University, NewSpace for the University of Newcastle, and the Boradmeadows Children’s Court.
