Bridge House LA Tour | 11:15A

Learning Units: 1.25 LU/HSW (per tour)

A visionary architectural exploration born in the heart of Hancock Park, Bridge House LA (bridgehousela.com) has officially reached completion after 2 years of construction. Designed by Dan Brunn, AIA, Principal of Dan Brunn Architecture (danbrunn.com), the one-of-a kind “bridge house” will literally bridge 65’ over a natural stream. Staying consistent with Brunn’s “less is more” approach to building, the home will occupy 4,500 square feet on a 15,000 square-foot lot. The project’s commitment to sustainable solutions will serve as a demonstration of innovative systems and forward-thinking processes. The home’s design exemplifies Brunn’s signature minimalist aesthetic, evident in dynamic spatial choreography of light and volume. “The idea is to do something extraordinary with ordinary means,” says Brunn.

Tour Led By:

  • Dan Brunn, AIA, Principal of Dan Brunn Architecture

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will discuss the architect’s challenging process of designing a 4,500 square-foot house on a 15,000 square-foot lot, stretching 210 feet across the grounds and bridging 65’ over a natural stream.
  • Participants will explore the innovative structural systems that were used to build the house. The structure contains up to 90% recycled steel content, creates zero onsite construction waste, and helps in attaining net-zero energy, using solar panels on the whole of its roof to generate power.
  • Participants will be able to explain how the site location positions the project to make optimal use of natural daylight and reduce heat gain.
  • Participants will be able to describe sustainable elements of the project including the materials used, and the use of renewable energy and waste management. For example, western red cedar is exceptionally environmentally friendly, removing greenhouse gasses from the air. It is also renewable, biodegradable, and sourced from sustainably managed forests. Beyond the inherent eco-friendly qualities, the team selected knotty, “remnant” wood, instead of clear cedar, minimizing waste.
