The 2018 AIA|LA Restaurant Design Awards Jury is composed of: Christopher Warren, AIA, Maile Pingel, and Ron Smoire.
Chris founded WORD in 2010 and quickly became sought out for his progressive retail, hospitality and residential designs. He was recently interviewed about the future of design for Vitra’s publication “The Merchant”, and also led a discussion on the same topic at LA’s “Retail West” event. Prior to starting WORD, Chris was a project designer under Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne at Morphosis, as well as one of the founding partners of the award winning office, Studio Shift. In addition to his work as a practitioner, Chris taught design at the University of Southern California for many years as an adjunct assistant professor, and delivered the keynote commencement address for the School of Architecture’s class of 2011. He has since taught architecture design programs in China and Italy, and most recently served as assistant visiting professor of urban design at Washington University in St. Louis. Chris is on the board of directors for the California Heritage Museum in Santa Monica, and remains active in many charities. He is LEED accredited and is a licensed architect in California.
Maile Pingel is a design historian (MPhil, University of Glasgow) and a journalist. She writes frequently for Angeleno, LALA and Luxe magazines, among others, and has contributed to scholarly publications including Craft in America, the exhibition catalogue that launched the award-winning PBS series of the same name; the Museum of Art and Design’s Crafting Modernism; and furniture designer Charles Hollis Jones’ new book, Mr. Lucite. Prior to a freelance career, Maile was an editor at Architectural Digest, a wonderful experience that’s recently been revived as she and several former colleagues have reunited to work on a special project with the magazine’s longtime editor, Paige Rense. Maile began her career in the Decorative Arts Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and she continues to follow her passion for antiques with an online shop for “smalls.” She is the 10th great-granddaughter of Elizabethan dramatist Thomas Lodge and loves family history, an interest that’s inspired her to start her first novel. She lives in L.A. with her husband, dog and cat.
Ron Smoire is a design professional specializing in residential kitchen design. His passion for thoughtfully-designed kitchens was kindled while a young man working as a cabinet maker in his father’s workshop. A 30-year career as a professional chef in US and abroad ensued, and included working in the best restaurants in L.A. and Europe, having a catering company, and as a private chef. A lifelong commitment to quality ingredients and craft informs his work. This accumulated wisdom followed by his interior design training has prepared him for collaborations with discriminating clients and their architects, interior designers and builders that result in kitchens that are not only beautiful but actually work.
