DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS\nJoin us for this one-hour session where we will review the 2025 Energy Code Mandatory and Prescriptive updates for nonresidential school buildings such as envelope\, mechanical\, covered process\, photovoltaic\, and battery storage building systems. In addition\, we will cover the new electric-ready and performance compliance metrics introduced in the 2025 Energy Code. \n  \nThis is a virtual event. Registered attendees will be sent a zoom link 24 hours prior to the event in the event confirmation email. \n  \nSPEAKERS\n \nGina Rodda – Owner of Gabel Energy \nGina Rodda is currently the Owner of Gabel Energy out of Castro Valley\, California\, and has been in the energy modeling field since 1991. She is an energy analyst performing a wide range of responsibilities in both residential and nonresidential construction pertaining to compliance standards and energy modeling within the United States\, while specializing in California Building Code. She engineers bio-aggregate materials across three interlocking scales\, spanning material chemistry\, assembly design\, and regional bio-circular supply chains\, turning lab-tested properties into assemblies that manage energy flow and sequester carbon. A former SHoP Architects and hanrahanMeyers designer\, she partners with manufacturers and builders to carry findings from bench to full-scale prototype. Gavin Knowles\, RA\, is the Founder of Knowles Architect\, Inc.\, a full-services architecture firm focused on the highly personalized and place-based design of residences\, restaurants\, and other facilities which celebrate their connection to the natural world and long-term land stewardship. His work integrates bio-based construction techniques to enhance the life of building occupants by creating bonds of affection between them and local ecologies while fostering bonds of economy between the building’s construction and local land communities. Prior to founding his own firm\, Gavin was a Principal at Lundberg Design in San Francisco and a designer at William McDonough + Partners in Charlottesville\, VA. He holds an M. Her work centers on connecting design practice\, building materials research\, and policy to support the transition to lower-carbon buildings. \n \nDr. Eshrar Latif – Associate Professor at the Welsh School of Architecture\, Cardiff University \nDr Eshrar Latif is an Associate Professor at the Welsh School of Architecture\, Cardiff University\, and a member of the University Senate. Trained in architecture\, he is an architectural scientist specialising in sustainable building materials\, building physics and bio-based materials and construction. His PhD examined the hygrothermal performance of hemp-based thermal insulation materials in the UK\, forming the basis of his long-standing research on hemp-lime\, hemp shive\, cob and earth-based systems. His research grants include hemp-lime building monitoring\, optimisation of hygrothermal properties of hemp-lime\, development of hemp-wool bio-envelope systems\, hygrothermal modelling\, durability testing\, and net-zero new-build and retrofit integrated with circular economy principles. He is co-author of Thermal Insulation Materials for Building Applications and has contributed internationally through keynote talks\, technical committees\, doctoral supervision and industry-facing research. \n \nAaron Grail – Founder\, Aaron Grail Construction \nAaron Grail is a licensed California general contractor and founder of Aaron Grail Consulting and Construction\, based in Sebastopol. With VBP\, he is leading the deployment of their carbon-storing\, straw-insulated wall panels\, developed under the EPA SBIR grant program. To address this need\, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)\, CAL FIRE\, and Insurance Institute for Business and Home (IBHS)\, embarked on a sixteen-month collaborative effort\, culminating in this Hazard Mitigation Methodology (HMM). \nIn this discussion of the HHM\, we’ll talk about fire and ember resistant building materials\, identifying vulnerabilities to structures and neighboring parcels\, building codes\, and cost-effective measures that you can implement right away. The Parcel Assessment for Wildfire Hardening (PAWH) form will be presented\, guiding a property owner\, inspector\, or professional through a process that incorporates building codes\, fire codes\, & the latest science in wildfire hardening. The PAWH form also labels certain hardening mitigations as Energy Efficient (EE); This direct correlation between energy efficiency & wildfire hardening will assist homeowners to improve both resilience and energy savings. \n  \nThis event will be virtual over ZOOM. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 AIA|LA and LACP Urban Design Review Sessions\nArchitects & designers passionate about improving the design quality of newly proposed projects throughout the City of Los Angeles are encouraged to participate in the AIA|LA & Los Angeles City Planning (LACP) Professional Volunteer Program (PVP). \nWHAT:\nWe will be coordinating the following urban design review sessions\, which will serve as opportunities for leading design talent to help the Los Angles City Planning’s Urban Design Studio critically review upcoming projects throughout our City.   \nWHERE:\nAll of the sessions are held virtually on zoom. You must register to get access. \nREGISTER HERE\nWHEN:\nThe first\, second\, and third Tuesday of each month starting at 10am – 12pm.   Full List of Dates \nWHY:\nThe review sessions will will enable a rotating pool of architects and designers the opportunity to provide insightful and critical design feedback on pending projects that will be reviewed by the Planning Commission. He developed the Department’s Green Building Division to implement the Los Angeles Green Building Code. Osama Younan is a licensed Mechanical Engineer with the State of California and a LEED Accredited Professional with the U.S. Green Building Council. Osama Younan serves as the Chair of the Green Building Committee for the Los Angeles Basin Chapter which represents eighty-nine jurisdictions in Southern California\, he serves on the Green Building Code Advisory Committee for the California Building Standards Commission that provides recommendations regarding the development of the CALGreen Code\, and he serves on the ASHREA Standard 189.1 Committee “Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings”. \nOsama Younan is a Licensed Professional Engineer\, LEED Accredited Professional\, and he oversees the operations of all the bureaus in the department.
