In 1981\, at the age of 8\, political upheaval and war with neighboring Iraq forced Adrin and his family to flee Iran and immigrate to the United States. For years\, Adrin’s family remained separated across the globe until finally reuniting and settling in the San Fernando Valley. \nGrowing up\, Adrin excelled academically and worked part-time in local Valley banks to support his education. He attended Pierce College\, California State University\, Northridge (CSUN)\, and in 1996 earned a degree in Economics from the University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA). \nEntering Public Service \nDuring his time in school\, Adrin became actively involved in civic engagements. He interned in the office of former Congressman Howard Berman and volunteered for various non-profit organizations focused on youth and civic engagement. \nAs a founding board member of Generation Next\, he dedicated his efforts to mentoring and supporting young individuals facing poverty and other challenges. \nAdrin was accepted into the prestigious CORO Fellowship Program\, gaining experience in the offices of elected officials such as Congressman Brad Sherman\, Governor Gray Davis\, and Los Angeles City Councilmember Tom Labonge. He eventually became Chief of Staff to the then Assistant Majority Leader of the California State Assembly\, Paul Krekorian. \nService in the California State Assembly \nDespite being heavily outspent\, Adrin Nazarian won an underdog campaign and was elected to the California State Assembly in November 2012. \nFor over a decade\, until 2022\, he proudly represented California’s 46th Assembly District\, spearheading key legislative initiatives and securing significant state investments in his district. Including the Hollywood Hills\, Lake Balboa\, North Hills\, North Hollywood\, Panorama City\, Sherman Oaks\, Studio City\, Toluca Lake\, Valley Glen\, Universal City\, Van Nuys\, and Valley Village. In his new role\, Sata will lead the district’s $14.9 billion capital improvement program for the nine-campus district to create inspiring academic spaces. \nSata brings a wealth of knowledge in campus planning and construction from his most recent role as vice president of operations and capital projects at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. There\, Sata led\, planned and executed major infrastructure projects while ensuring collaboration between build teams\, staff and students. Sata also worked for the Solano Community College\, Santa Rosa Junior College and the Sacramento City Unified School District\, where he oversaw the delivery of numerous prominent projects. DESCRIPTION:AIA|LA City Leaders Breakfast Reception w/ Lourdes Castro Ramírez – President & CEO\, Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA)\n2025 City Leaders Breakfast Series Presented By:  \nThe 2025 AIA|LA City Leaders Breakfast Series allows architects & designers\, and other community stakeholders to meet directly with key individuals transforming Los Angeles in a roundtable setting to discuss innovative ideas to ensure a healthy\, sustainable\, and economically competitive future. \n \nLourdes Castro Ramírez – President & CEO\, Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) \nUnanimously appointed by the HACLA Board of Commissioners\, Lourdes Castro Ramirez leads the second-largest public housing authority in the nation\, serving over 200\,000 individuals. \nAs President and CEO\, Castro Ramirez is strengthening the agency’s collaborative commitment to people\, place\, and pathways by expanding affordable housing\, creating greater access\, investing in people\, and building strong communities. \nBefore joining HACLA\, Lourdes served as Chief Housing and Homelessness Solutions Officer for Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. In this role\, she led the Mayor’s comprehensive citywide priorities focused on preventing and reducing street homelessness\, fast-tracking affordable housing production\, forging partnerships that lead to increased housing and service coordination\, and developing unified regional solutions by working closely with city\, county\, state\, and federal partners. She continues to serve as housing advisor to Mayor Bass. \nPreviously\, she was the Secretary of the California Business\, Consumer Services\, and Housing Agency under Governor Gavin Newsom. To address this need\, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)\, CAL FIRE\, and Insurance Institute for Business and Home (IBHS)\, embarked on a sixteen-month collaborative effort\, culminating in this Hazard Mitigation Methodology (HMM). \nIn this discussion of the HHM\, we’ll talk about fire and ember resistant building materials\, identifying vulnerabilities to structures and neighboring parcels\, building codes\, and cost-effective measures that you can implement right away. The Parcel Assessment for Wildfire Hardening (PAWH) form will be presented\, guiding a property owner\, inspector\, or professional through a process that incorporates building codes\, fire codes\, & the latest science in wildfire hardening. The PAWH form also labels certain hardening mitigations as Energy Efficient (EE); This direct correlation between energy efficiency & wildfire hardening will assist homeowners to improve both resilience and energy savings. \n  \nThis event will be virtual over ZOOM. Friedman has lived in California for more than three decades. Currently\, she lives in Glendale with her husband and daughter. Friedman proudly represents California’s 30th District\, which includes Burbank\, Glendale\, West Hollywood\, and parts of Los Angeles and Pasadena. \nFriedman is committed to making meaningful progress on the issues that matter most to her district: making housing more affordable\, safeguarding access to clean water\, protecting communities from wildfires and other disasters\, and creating an economy that works for everyone. \nFriedman serves on two key committees: the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the House Committee on Science\, Space\, and Technology. \nBefore joining Congress\, Friedman represented the 44th district in the California State Assembly\, where she built a reputation as a tireless advocate for the environment\, housing\, and transportation. Her leadership in urban innovation is widely recognized both in the U.S. and abroad. In 2006\, Cuff founded cityLAB\, a research and design center that initiates experimental projects to explore metropolitan possibilities. In 2019\, cityLAB expanded its social and political engagement by creating coLAB in the Westlake/MacArthur Park neighborhood of Los Angeles\, in long-term partnership with community organizations. cityLAB represented the United States at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale\, was featured on CNN and in Newsweek magazine\, and was named one of the top four urban think tanks in the country by Architect Magazine. The lab’s “housing first” research demonstrates that affordable\, well-designed housing and neighborhoods are attainable foundations of equitable cities. cityLAB has developed sustainable\, high-performance\, low-cost housing prototypes for infill sites ranging from backyards to schoolyards. In 2017\, after a decade of research that included a full-scale demonstration house built on the UCLA campus\, Cuff co-authored California State legislation\, effectively opening 8.1M single-family lots for secondary rental units. \nSince 2013\, Cuff has led a cross-disciplinary team at UCLA with a substantial multi-year award from The Mellon Foundation for the “Urban Humanities Initiative.” UHI offers students from architecture\, urban studies\, and the humanities a radical platform for crossdisciplinary\, impactful\, urban scholarship and action. Cuff co-authored a book about this effort entitled Urban Humanities: New Practices for Reimagining the City (MIT Press\, 2020). This is the most recent of numerous books\, including Architects’ People (with W.R. Ellis; 1989)\, Architecture: The Story of Practice (1989)\, The Provisional City (2000)\, and Fast Forward Urbanism (edited with R. Sherman\, 2011). Dana Cuff publishes and lectures extensively about the modern American metropolis\, architectural agency\, affordable housing\, and architecture’s potential for creating more just cities. Dr. Cuff recently received three prestigious awards that describe her career: Women in Architecture Activist of the Year (2019\, Architectural Record)\, an international prize for Researcher of the Year (2019\, Architectural Research Centers Consortium)\, and Educator of the Year (2020\, American Institute of Architects Los Angeles). \n  \n\nEmmanuel Proussaloglou – Co-Director\, cityLAB \nEmmanuel Proussaloglou is an architect\, planner\, and researcher focused on interrogating the impact of public policy on the built environment. He leads cityLAB’s Reimagining Housing research area\, and his current work focuses on studying the design\, provision\, and distribution of affordable housing. He has worked as a researcher at think tanks such as the Brookings Institution and the Center for Neighborhood Technology\, and as a designer at architecture films such as Perkins and Will and Sharif\, Lynch; Architecture. \n  \n\nRyan Conroy – Daly Architects Director of Architecture / cityLAB \nRyan Conroy is cityLAB’s first Director of Architecture\, nearly a decade after inaugurating the undergraduate fellow program. Ryan is a practicing architect\, recognized for originating innovative models of multifamily housing and climate-adaptive sustainable design\, always\nwith an eye to each project’s larger urban context. He has held research positions at UC Berkeley and the Los Angeles Department of Planning\, and continues an ongoing collaboration with Kevin Daly Architects. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 AIA|LA and LACP Urban Design Review Sessions\nArchitects & designers passionate about improving the design quality of newly proposed projects throughout the City of Los Angeles are encouraged to participate in the AIA|LA & Los Angeles City Planning (LACP) Professional Volunteer Program (PVP). \nWHAT:\nWe will be coordinating the following urban design review sessions\, which will serve as opportunities for leading design talent to help the Los Angles City Planning’s Urban Design Studio critically review upcoming projects throughout our City.   \nWHERE:\nAll of the sessions are held virtually on zoom. Earning a license to practice architecture is a massive effort—and firms can devote resources to their staff to reach that goal. This presentation guides firms of all sizes in the why and how they should undertake the responsibility for fostering the process.\nPresenters will include success stories about how their firm has assisted more than 30 designers get licensed to practice architecture since implementing a focused assistance/acceleration program ten years ago. SUMMARY:Practical Considerations for Specifying Heat Pump Water Heaters
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \nHeat pump water heaters (HPWH) have quickly become indispensable for complying with the California energy code (Title 24\, Part 6). This class will lead architects and designers through proper location choices for heat pump water heaters\, as well as ventilation\, maintenance\, power\, and condensate management\, so that you can specify these units with confidence. This course will also detail the greenhouse gas reduction benefits of heat pump technologies and how they contribute toward achieving a project’s Zero Net Carbon Design goals. \n\nThis event will be virtual over ZOOM. Meet the HBSB board members and OSHPD staff who will be presenting the Road Show as they share how they work together and how the design and construction industry can get involved. \nDue to building security requirements\, please bring your ID to present at the security desk and OSHPD staff will be available to escort you up to the OSHPD conference room. \n  \nSPEAKERS \n \nArash Altoontash\, PhD\, S.E. + Deputy Division Chief + OSHPD \nDr. Arash Altoontash is the HCAI Deputy Division Chief for Southern California\, overseeing the Inspection Services\, Fire Prevention\, Architectural and Engineering\, and Field Operations units in the Office of Statewide Hospital Planning and Development. He joined the state service in 2018 and has served as a Senior Structural Engineer and Supervisor of Health Facility Review prior to his current assignment.\n \nArash completed his graduate education at Stanford University in 2004 and is a registered civil and structural engineer in California. You must register to get access. \nWHEN:\nThe first\, second\, and third Tuesday of each month starting at 10am – 12pm.   Full List of Dates \nWHY:\nThe review sessions will will enable a rotating pool of architects and designers the opportunity to provide insightful and critical design feedback on pending projects that will be reviewed by the Planning Commission. Famous for its distinctive design\, and blending indoor and outdoor spaces\, this beautiful home has been featured in numerous films and TV shows. The current owner\, James Goldstein\, has extensively renovated and enhanced the property\, adding features like a James Turrell Skyspace and a nightclub called Club James. Goldstein has also pledged to donate the residence to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).  \n  \nInformation regarding the tour will be emailed directly to registrants 24 hours before the event. \n  \nTour Led by: \n \nRoberta Leighton – General Manager\, Sheats-Goldstein House \nRoberta Leighton plays a crucial role as the general manager of the Sheats-Goldstein House in Los Angeles\, a renowned architectural masterpiece designed by John Lautner. She effectively “runs the place” for the owner\, Jim Goldstein\, and manages numerous events like movie shoots\, commercials\, and photo shoots that take place at the iconic residence. Her in-depth knowledge of the house\, both architecturally and socially\, makes her a popular and engaging tour guide. \n\n\n\n\n\nBeyond her role at the Sheats-Goldstein House\, Roberta Leighton is also known for her acting career\, with notable appearances in movies and television shows such as Stripes (where she played Bill Murray’s girlfriend)\, The Dukes of Hazzard\, and The Young and The Restless.  \nShe is further involved in efforts to promote and celebrate John Lautner’s architecture\, including coordinating tours of the Sheats-Goldstein complex through the John Lautner Foundation.  \n\n\n\n\n\n  \nParking Information: \nPark on the street along Angelo View Dr. or Davies.
