SUMMARY:ARCH TOUR FEST: The North Range\, William Andrews Clark Memorial Library\, UCLA
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Tom Bonner \nARCH TOUR FEST: The North Range\, William Andrews Clark Memorial Library\, UCLA\nThe Clark Library is an amazingly little-known Renaissance revival masterpiece built in 1926 by philanthropist William Andrews Clark\, Jr. as a memorial to his father\, a notorious copper baron and a U.S. Senator. It was designed by the city’s classiest architect\, Robert Farquahar\, as a lavishly detailed\, deeply encoded message to the cognoscenti. It glitters from a walled block in a once grand Los Angeles neighborhood. At Clark Jr.’s death in 1934 the entire property was willed to UCLA with the stipulation that nothing be built above grade within 100 feet of the library. By then Clark had removed ten neighboring houses\, relocated a two-story chauffeur’s quarters\, extended an existing brick wall around the block\, and engaged landscape architect Ralph Cornell to remodel the site as a public park. Whatever Clark had in mind\, it was never completed. The library drifted for the next 60 years as an unfinished landscape made emptier by the removal of Clark’s house and observatory. The Clark is not only the focus of research activity as the UCLA Center for 17th and 18th Century Studies\, but also an active venue for chamber music. \nFunding allowed construction of support facilities as a first step in transforming the library site into a community of scholars. This posed questions of enclosure\, anchorage\, juxtaposition\, and landscape dynamics. The plan builds on Clark’s concern with enclosure- an extendable wall thickened to 22 feet\, cracked open with daylight and as tall as we could push it. Four rectangular modules are separated by courtyards to form a “range” (an 18th century term used by Jefferson at the University of Virginia) that runs 270 feet along the north side of the block to leave the center suggestively open. It houses editorial offices\, storage\, conference\, food service facilities\, and guest quarters. In form and color\, it relates to Clark’s stocky red brick wall and not to the delicate library from which it respectfully withdraws. Operating as a spatial counterweight\, it lessens the emptiness of the garden expanse\, and its two-story height further encloses the open garden. Its mural presence palpably anchors the library when seen from across the lawn. \nDesign Awards: AIA/Los Angeles 1990; AIA/California Council 1991; AIA National Brick in Architecture 1995 \nTour Led by: \nBarton Phelps\, FAIA emeritus \nOver nearly a half-century of practice\, Barton Phelps\, FAIA\, has contributed to the profession of architecture in a remarkable variety of ways. He is an inspiring teacher\, an engaging writer\, editorial leader\, and a determined advocate for progressive change. His leadership at local\, state\, and national levels-for the AIA\, NEA Design Arts\, GSA Design Excellence program\, Society of Architectural Historians\, Mayor’s Institute on City Design\, the University of California\, and the City of Los Angeles-has enhanced public environmental policy\, elevated architectural journalism\, and set new standards for recognition of design excellence. Above all\, Barton Phelps is an insightful designer\, whose work reveals a subtle\, studied grasp of the dynamics of urban and rural landscapes. He was the 2022 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from AIA/California. In addition to the North Range of the Clark Library\, projects for UCLA include the Seismic Renovation of Royce Hall\, the East Building of the University Lab School\, and the Adademic Advancement Center. Other new buildings include L.A. Public Libraries in Los Feliz\, Hollywood\, and Woodland Hills\, the performing Arts Center and Student Commons at Thacher School in Ojai\, and a major expansion of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium\, as well as residential and ecological retreat properties in California and across the U.S. \nDerek Christian Quezada Meneses – Head Librarian\, William Andrews Clark Memorial Library at UCLA \nDerek Christian Quezada Meneses is the Head Librarian of the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library at UCLA\, where he oversees one of the nation’s most distinguished collections of early modern\, fin-de-siècle\, and modern fine press materials. Before joining UCLA\, he held positions at the University of Southern California\, the University of California\, Irvine\, and the Getty Research Institute. \nIkumi Crocoll – Clark Library \nIkumi Crocoll has been the Instruction & Engagement Librarian at UCLA’s William Andrews Clark Memorial Library since 2021. Previously\, she worked as the Manuscripts & Special Collections Librarian at the Daughters of the American Revolution Library in D.C. and as a reference librarian at the Newberry Library in Chicago. SUMMARY:ARCH TOUR FEST: El Paradiso
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Jim Simmons \nARCH TOUR FEST: El Paradiso\nEl Paradiso (also known as the Grossman House) is the only existing all-aluminum house by Raphael Soriano\, FAIA\,. Architect Linda Brettler\, AIA\, embarked on a renovation in the spirit of the original\, transforming it into a home and architecture studio for herself. Working from original blueprints\, she updated the1964\, 3\,800-square-foot house to returned it to its ideal state\, while reworking inappropriate earlier revisions. To make it more inviting and incorporate her own design vision\, she discovered and embellished upon the house’s original sense of whimsy\, color\, and surprise. Situated on an oblong lot in the hills above Studio City in Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley\, the house’s perpendicular orientation and flowing functional floor plan allow for privacy and views from all rooms. \nOne of the more unusual aspects of the open-plan layout is that areas are separated by cabinetry rather than walls. These floating cabinetry units made from Micarta (an early form of high-pressure laminate) are designed to reflect the purpose and proportions of a room’s use. Brettler conducted an exacting restoration of the original features. Secondary lighting and LED replacements update the home\, as do the addition of electric shades\, new appliances and plumbing fixtures\, and cork flooring. Original laminates\, terrazzo\, and cork walls were rehabbed with care. The Grossman’s scrapbook of the house is an added bonus for tour-goers to view the original process. \n  \nTour Led by: \n  \nLinda Brettler\, AIA\, principal\, Linda Brettler | Architect \nLinda Brettler\, AIA\, has been a licensed architect since 1992. Her Los Angeles-based practice concentrates on creating single-family homes that fit her clients’ lifestyles. Brettler’s original architecture tends toward a natural contemporary approach\, while her renovation work often entails updating older properties for today’s needs. Her delight in details and materials is evident in the masterful tile work that has become her trademark. Prior to opening her own practice in 1996\, Brettler worked at award-winning architecture firms\, including Moore Ruble Yudell and Brenda Levin and Associates. She holds a BA in biochemistry from Harvard University and a Master of Architecture from UCLA. Brettler has served as the Cultural Heritage Commission’s Architect appointee for three Historic Protection Overlay Zones\, and as a Board Member of the LA Conservancy. \n  \nArchitect: Linda Brettler | Architect (Raphael Soriano original architect)\nBuilding Credits: \nGeneral Contractor: M.S. SUMMARY:ARCH TOUR FEST: Horizon House 2
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Karl Tso\, Geoffrey von Oeyen \nARCH TOUR FEST: Horizon House 2\nHorizon House 2 explores Robin Evans’s idea of Mies’s paradoxical symmetries\, using mirrored views—horizontally and vertically across the horizon—to register the architecture within its natural context. Oblique views of ocean and sky are framed by low-e multi-slide doors and large\, strategically placed mirrors\, referencing Southern California’s Light and Space art movement. \nThe house transitions from the familiar typology of a traditional ranch at the entry into a sequence of geometric viewing frames along the southern facade. A bisected gable roof\, appearing to cantilever\, is suspended by a hidden steel structure and a visible 57-foot clear-span truss that enables spatial continuity between the interior and the pool deck. A sand-finished concrete floor—an abstract beach at low tide—features a saw-cut grid that reconciles the original house’s orientation with the east-west pool axis. \nDesigned for resilience and flexibility in a post-pandemic era of remote work and climate change\, the home includes a pool-fed exterior fire sprinkler system and a protected mechanical room that doubles as a belvedere. Every space frames the horizon\, either visually or conceptually\, and each architectural element serves multiple purposes. Bedrooms are separated from open living areas by semi-private courtyards\, allowing for events while maintaining privacy. Varying ceiling heights support classical music performances and live recordings. \nTen days after the owners moved into the house\, it was violently destroyed in the 2018 Woolsey Fire. In the aftermath\, Horizon House 2 was built on the existing deep foundations\, reinterpreting the original with improved daylighting\, passive ventilation\, and fire resilience. This project has been nominated for the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize\, and is the subject of several published articles and interviews regarding wildfire rebuilds and resiliency. This would be a unique opportunity to tour the project after its completion but prior to its architectural publication. \nTour Led By: \nGeoffrey von Oeyen\, Associate AIA\, Los Angeles Chapter – Principal of Geoffrey von Oeyen Design and von Oeyen Architects\, Associate Professor of Practice at the USC School of Architecture \nGeoffrey von Oeyen is a Principal of Geoffrey von Oeyen Design and von Oeyen Architects\, based in Los Angeles\, and is an Associate Professor of Practice at the USC School of Architecture. The recipient of multiple national awards including the Architectural League Prize\, Next Progressives\, and a MacDowell Fellowship\, his built architectural projects in North America and Asia have been widely published in international architectural publications such as Architect\, Architectural Record\, Dezeen\, Architizer\, and the Architect’s Newspaper. In 2025\, Geoffrey von Oeyen Design was selected as one of ten architecture firms to reimagine the iconic Case Study Program published by Arts & Architecture magazine through Case Study:Adapt and Architectural Digest in response to the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires. \nVon Oeyen’s built work was exhibited in the 2023 Venice Biennale “Time Space Existence”\, curated by the European Cultural Centre. In 2019\, Geoffrey von Oeyen Design was internationally longlisted by Dezeen for “Emerging Architect of the Year”\, and was selected by the Dezeen readers as one of the top ten firms in all disciplines of architecture\, design\, and landscape architecture. Geoffrey von Oeyen served as the president of the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design\, an Associate at Gehry Partners LLP\, and received an MArch from the Harvard Graduate School of Design\, an MPhil from the University of Cambridge\, and an AB from Stanford University. \n  \nArchitect: Geoffrey von Oeyen Design\nBuilding Credits:\nGeneral Contractor: TSO Construction\, General Contractor\nStructural Engineer: Thornton Thomasetti\nArchitect: Geoffrey von Oeyen Design & von Oeyen Architects \n  \nAIA CES: 1.5 LU|HSW Approved \nLearning Objectives: \n1. Adaptive Reuse and Geometric Reconciliation\nUnderstand how to transform existing structures through strategic geometric interventions\, specifically learning techniques for introducing new axes to unify disparate building elements while working within restrictive planning constraints and limited addition allowances. \n2. Environmental Integration and Optical Design\nExplore methods for designing buildings as optical instruments that frame specific views\, examining how mirror placement\, strategic fenestration\, and roof bisection can amplify natural panoramas while creating spatial continuity between interior and exterior environments. \n3. Climate-Responsive Design and Resilience Strategies\nAnalyze integrated passive environmental systems including mechanized skylights\, solar chimneys\, operable clerestory windows\, and fabric awning light shelves that achieve superior energy performance while addressing contemporary challenges of wildfire resilience and climate adaptation. \n4. Programmatic Flexibility Through Spatial Acoustics\nStudy how varied ceiling heights and clear-span structural solutions can create multiple acoustical environments within a single residence\, enabling diverse programming from intimate living to classical music performances while maintaining architectural cohesion and visual connections to the landscape. \nThese objectives focus on practical design strategies that architects can apply to their own projects while highlighting the theoretical underpinnings that make Horizon House 2 an exemplary case study in contemporary residential architecture. \n  \nParking:\nStreet Parking Available

SUMMARY:ARCH TOUR FEST: Highway House
DESCRIPTION:Photo Credit: Eric Staudenmaier \nARCH TOUR FEST: Highway House\nHighway House is a Woolsey Fire Rebuild project. The steep Santa Monica Mountains serve as both the formal inspiration and the immediate context for this new home. In the design\, sharply angled shed roofs follow the site’s topography while contrasting with the natural hillsides of this Malibu\, CA residence. \nAfter the original structures were lost\, the new formal massing reused the old concrete grade beams and caissons\, the only salvageable parts. The resulting structures\, though fully transformed\, avoid wasteful and environmentally intensive concrete work\, reducing costs and lowering the carbon footprint of this fire rebuild. \nIn addition to an architectural tour of the home\, we will highlight fire-resilient design strategies. The rebuild exceeds the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone (VHFHSZ) requirements. To address the recurring threats of wildfires and mudslides\, we implemented a combination of strategies. A specialized exterior sprinkler system is distributed across the roofs and adjacent hillsides to wet vegetation in the event of a fire\, preventing flames from approaching the house. Preserving vegetation also helps stabilize the hillside during the rainy season\, when mudslides are most common after fire damage. \nAdditional fire prevention measures include non-combustible exterior finishes; two 5\,000-gallon backup tanks for the sprinklers; an on-site hydrant that draws from the pool in case county water is lost; and a solar-charged battery backup system for power during outages. \nPassive design strategies further connect the occupants to their environment by maximizing daylighting and natural ventilation. Drought-tolerant\, native species planted throughout the property strengthen the local ecosystem while deepening the human connection to the land. \nShading is provided by trellises with custom laser-cut aluminum screens featuring a unifying motif. These create shifting shade patterns throughout the day\, which are backlit at night to remain visible. \n  \nTour Led By: \nLisa Little\, AIA – Principal and Founder at Vertebrae \nLisa Little holds a Master of Architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Little integrates her engineering and architecture backgrounds to create an atypical approach to research and design. Her work strives to engage ambient phenomena through built form while questioning the role of technology in contemporary architectural practice. She is the principal and founder of the award-winning firm Vertebrae. Recent projects include private residences\, commercial interiors\, and large-scale artworks. Little currently teaches graduate and undergraduate level design studios at the University of Southern California and is a licensed architect in the state of California. \n  \nArchitect: Vertebrae\nBuilding Credits:\nGC: RJC Builders\, Inc\nLandscape Architect: Terremoto\nSE: CW Howe\n \n  \nAIA CES: 1.0 LU|HSW Approved \nLearning Objectives \nParticipants will be able to explain how reusing the old concrete grade beams and caissons\, the only salvageable parts of the original house\, avoids wasteful and environmentally intensive concrete work\, reducing costs and lowering the carbon footprint of this fire rebuild. \nParticipants will review how the specialized exterior sprinkler system is distributed across the roofs and adjacent hillsides to wet vegetation in the event of a fire\, preventing flames from approaching the house. DESCRIPTION:ARCH TOUR FEST: La Cienega 23\nThis 5-story\, 23-unit housing project in West Hollywood draws inspiration from the city’s commitment to promote thoughtful design through courtyard housing and community-driven city development. Located on N. La Cienega Blvd. near Sunset Blvd.\, La Cienega 23 judiciously reduces its allowable building envelope in order to maximize open space and provide a common open scape. The resulting massing responds to the adjacent buildings and creates a transition between the surrounding higher-density blocks and the low-density residential buildings to the east. The design also reflects our mutual pledge with the City of West Hollywood toward building a better and more sustainable environment. This project incorporates a number of holistic\, passive sustainable strategies that address issues of site\, orientation\, organization\, materiality\, and environmental exposure. \nTour Led By: \nKevin Murray – Associate\, Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects \nSince joining LOHA in 2017\, Kevin has led projects across a broad range of scales\, including urban revitalization\, municipal partnerships\, multi-family residential developments\, and local cultural institutions. His notable projects include The Convent Performance Space and Education Center\, Silver Lake Multi-Family Housing\, and a Re-visioning of the Beverly Hills Streetscape and Transportation Infrastructure. As a Project Lead\, Kevin has initiated and integrated communications among governmental leaders\, community members\, project stakeholders\, clients\, and consultants. He is passionate about collaborative work that marries context and novelty\, and is dedicated to creating architecture that supports a more equitable future for Los Angeles. Kevin holds degrees from Harvard University and Washington University in St. Louis\, and has received several awards for design excellence including the Rotch Fellowship\, KPF Traveling Fellowship\, and the Frederick Widmann Prize. \n\nGhazal Khezri – Director\, Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects \nGhazal Khezri\, AIA\, is a director at LOHA. She has been practicing for over 15 years and led the design teams on projects such as Sandi Simon Center for Dance\, Esri Campus Center\, Wesley 3434\, La Cienega 23\, and many others. She has contributed to a diverse project typology\, from cultural institutions\, housing\, and mixed-use to installations and objects. Beyond project leadership\, she plays a key role in shaping the firm’s strategic vision. \nGhazal’s design approach leans heavily on finding adventurous solutions responsive to the context\, culture\, and ecology of the place to bring joy and welcome transformation. Her ongoing interest includes unlocking new possibilities by questioning when to use an existing building instead of building a new one. \nGhazal contributes to the broader dialogue on housing and design equity through active local engagement\, including community-driven rebuilding efforts in Altadena\, as well as participation in panel discussions. She has served as a juror for several AIA Design Honor Awards and as a design critic at institutions such as the University of Southern California (USC)\, the University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc)\, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan\, and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and Innsbruck. \n\nArchitect: Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects \nBuilding Credits:\nGeneral Contractor: YS Buildings\nStructural Engineer: Amir Pirbadian\nLandscape Architect: STOSS\nInterior Design: Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects \n  \nAIA CES: 1.0 LU|HSW Approved \nLearning Objectives \n1. SUMMARY:Joint AIA|LA UDC & APA LA Section Community Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Joint LA AIA UDC & APA LA Section Community Mixer\nDate: Wednesday\, November 19\, 2025\nTime: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM\nLocation: Mrs. Fish\, 448 S Hill St\, Los Angeles\, CA 90013 \nSchedule: \n\n6:00 PM – Networking & Welcome\n7:00 PM – Speaker Remarks\n8:00 PM – Reception\n\nDescription:\nThe LA AIA Urban Design Committee (UDC)\, in collaboration with the APA Los Angeles Section\, is proud to host the 2nd Annual Community Mixter at Mrs. Fish in Downtown Los Angeles. This year’s event will focus on mobility and community planning initiatives surrounding major events such as LA28. Short talks will be given by representatives from LA Metro and other community-based organizations. \nPlease note: This event does not seek sponsorship directly from LA28. \nBackground:\nThe Mixter aims to facilitate an exchange of ideas inspired by LA28’s “lasting legacy” initiative\, as requested by the International Olympic Committee\, which emphasizes identifying meaningful local investments beyond the Games. This aligns with the LA AIA UDC’s ongoing commitment to community planning for large-scale events shaping Los Angeles. \nBuilding on discussions from LA AIA’s Ecompass 2023\, this event continues the conversation on equitable\, healthy\, and inclusive outcomes that strengthen Los Angeles communities impacted by transformative urban events. \nDiscussion Topics:\nGuests are encouraged to share brief insights on one or more of the following themes: \n\nMobility for Large Events\nLocal Initiatives\nInternational Transit-Oriented Communities\nCommunity Planning Concepts\n\nThis is an informal gathering—no PowerPoint or formal presentation is required. \nInvited Guests Include: \n\nLivable Communities\nUCLA / International Fellow\nACLA\nAIA|LA JEDI\nSCAG\nSoLa Impact\n\nParking & Transit: \nAIA|LA encourages everyone to walk\, bike\, or ride METRO. \nThe AIA|LA Urban Design Committee Mission Statement \nDoes anyone care about urban space today? Whatever happened to visionary urban design? Where is the model for Los Angeles? Is there a model for Los Angeles? Isn’t it the architect’s job to design the city? Can we envision and support non-commercialized collective spaces? Can we be radically optimistic about the future without seeming naive? Doesn’t the term “Urban Design” sound banal\, academic\, and indeterminate? Why is that? Can we change that? Is there political viability for large-scale ambitious planning initiatives? How can infrastructural investment alter and improve the way the city functions? What is the new mayor going to do about homelessness\, and how can we\, as architects\, help? Not to say anything about the policy\, regulations\, and red tape that govern land use\, planning\, and development\, but if we had to say something about it\, where would we even start? What about the history of redlining\, discriminatory lending practices\, and segregation that has produced our present urban patterns? Can architects help foster an agenda of spatial equity in the city? Can small-scale interventions be more effective than large-scale propositions in making a more liveable city? How can return on investment be measured\, other than in dollars and cents? Mass Timber sounds great\, but what’s the story behind the sustainability argument? How can we develop the city more sustainably? Remember all that fuss about the LA River? What’s going on there? Same question\, but about the Olympics? How much impact can an individual building have on the life of a city? What are the best practices for designing housing today? How can architects best respond to the current State of Emergency? Can we\, as a profession\, be more proactive in proposing solutions that we want to see implemented? \nThe AIA|LA Urban Design Committee believes that we can\, and should. Our mission is about asking questions\, fostering discussions\, proposing solutions\, and illustrating visions for the future of Los Angeles. \n  \nAIA|LA Urban Design Committee Leadership: \n \nKelly Nicholas\, AIA\, LEED AP BD+C – Associate\, ZGF ARCHITECTS & Chair\, AIA|LA Urban Design Committee \nKelly is a licensed architect practicing at ZGF Architects in Downtown Los Angeles. A recent flood-turned-renovation sparked her passion for remodeling and unique perspective at the intersection of design and smart home technology. She now bridges the gap between architects\, interior designers\, and home automation specialists\, creating “intelligent homes” that blend technology and beauty without compromising a home’s aesthetic or usability. Carley’s 15-year career as a technology expert includes collaborations with premier brands like LG\, Samsung\, Citibank and Google. Her work has been featured in publications like Real Simple\, Good Housekeeping and Elle Decor.\n  \nSPEAKERS\n \nChris Shanley – Principal\, Marmol Radziner \nChris has been with Marmol Radziner since 1992. Her holistic design perspective has been honed and applied over three decades of industry leadership and iconic project work\, making her an invaluable team member that elevates the aspirations of every project she is involved in. \nTeal is a Senior Principal and President at HLB lighting design and a leader in HLB’s West Coast\, national and international efforts. SUMMARY:Future Architects & Student Presentations
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS\nPlease join the AIA LA Healthcare Committee for our annual tradition of kicking off the new year with future architects! Student presentations from Cal Poly Pomona Department of Architecture\, the UCLA School of Architecture\, and the USC School of Architecture will feature inspiring projects centered around healthcare and wellness. \nThe student presentations featured at this event are listed below. Roughly half our time will be student presentations with the other half devoted to Q&A for each group. Support our incoming emerging professionals by attending this event and get the first sneak peek at future design leaders! \n  \n“Architecture that Functions as Everyday Health Infrastructure” \nDusty Frye\, Hena Muttreja\, Monserrat Acosta Gomez\, Vivila Leigh \n2025 UCLA Masters of Architecture Grads \n\nImagining cooling centers as flexible\, semi-exterior civic spaces that support community life\, health\, and resilience in heat-vulnerable neighborhoods. \n  \n“Extending Gay Asian American Culture in West Hollywood” \n Eric Yu – Cannon Design\, 2025 USC Masters of Architecture Grad \n\nBuilding on the design legacy of John Chase\, West Hollywood has long functioned as a queer refuge within Los Angeles\, shaped by its mixed-use public and outdoor spaces. Drawing from Yona Friedman’s principles of flexible and adaptable architecture and José Muñoz’s theory of queer futurity\, this project proposes a flexible tensile canopy structure informed by gay Asian American aesthetics. Designed to support a queer Asian American kickball team participating in OutLoud Sports\, the intervention seeks to expand Asian American visibility\, inclusion\, and representation within West Hollywood. Whether deployed at Poinsettia Park\, West Hollywood Park\, or Temple City Park\, the structure operates as an ephemeral gathering space that foregrounds intersectional identity while fostering shared values of community and inclusion. \n  \n“Biomimicry in Façade Design” \nAachal Katwa – USC Masters of Architecture Student \n\nAs cannabis and tobacco use rise\, the smoke that lingers in our shared air is quietly harming the people around us. Second- and third-hand exposure affects children\, workers\, neighbors\, anyone simply passing by. I believe facades can do more than mark boundaries; they can participate in protecting public life. This project introduces a passive\, gill-inspired façade that gently responds when someone walks on the sidewalk\, slowing and capturing smoke trough layered filters before releasing cleaner air back into the environment. This is what my façade aims to do: safeguard the public through quiet\, responsive environmental mediation. \n  \n“Integrating Mind\, Memory\, and Meaningful Care” \nCal Poly Pomona Healthcare Studio \nIntroduction by Professor Jimmy Macias – HMC Architects\, Cal Poly Pomona \n  \nOur studio will explore how architecture can support a new model of healthcare that unites brain health and mental health treatment under one roof. By integrating memory care\, cognitive rehabilitation\, and comprehensive mental wellness services\, we aim to create environments that treat the whole person—mind\, body\, and spirit. This approach empowers patients\, supports caregivers\, and redefines how communities engage with brain and mental health care. The project will include a 90\,000 sq ft mental hospital located next to the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas\, Nevada. \n  \nTeam 1 \nChieh Chi “Stanley” \nChristopher Norona \nDominic Jarquin \nJason Rinaldi \nJesus Jacquez Sicaeros \n  \nTeam 2 \nJulianna Altamirano \nKeyla Jimenez \nMarvin Alexander \nRam Adriel Rivadeneira \nDaniel Hernandez \n  \nTeam 3 \nDavid Lucas \nGabriel Torres \nLwin Aung \nMonica Rico \n\nPARKING\nStreet parking is available in the area. Please be mindful of the signs. \n\nTICKET PURCHASE INSTRUCTIONS & SUPPORT\n\n*Note to all registrants: When purchasing a ticket\, please double check that the address + zip code that you provide matches the billing information on the card you are using.* \nTo purchase a ticket\, please select the quantity of tickets you want next to the proper ticket tier using the + sign\, and then select “Get Tickets.” \n\n

DESCRIPTION:FOUR SEASONS THE SURFCLUB – UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HOSPITALITY \nImage Courtesy of Tribù \nEVENT DETAILS\nJoin AIA | LA Interior Architecture Committee and Tribù for an evening exploring the creative crossover between architecture\, interiors\, and furniture design—and how thinking at the scale of an object can transform the way we shape space. \nHosted inside the beautifully curated Tribù showroom\, this program features Marc Merckx\, William Hefner\, and Cory Grosser —practitioners who move fluidly between room and object and bring real-world insights on process\, craft\, culture\, and collaboration. \nTogether\, the panel will explore how designers translate spatial thinking into furniture (and back again)\, what shifts in materiality and detailing across scales\, and how teams navigate constraints like performance\, ergonomics\, and production—without losing the original design intent. Grounded in built work\, the conversation will also consider how thoughtful design shapes daily experience and creative culture\, and how interdisciplinary collaboration strengthens both the work and the communities it serves. \nRather than a free-form panel\, the evening is designed as a guided\, MC’d conversation led by Daniel Glaser and Pearse Lumb of Tribù\, with clear themes to keep the pace strong—plus built-in moments to bring the audience in. Expect a lively discussion\, practical takeaways\, and time to connect over food and drinks among the collections. \n  \nSPEAKERS\n  \n \nMarc Merckx \nMarc Merckx is an architect and furniture designer whose work bridges the disciplines of architecture\, interiors\, and product design. He designed the Tribù showroom and is also a designer of Tribù furniture collections\, bringing a rare perspective on how spatial concepts translate into objects—and how objects\, in turn\, shape the experience of a space. His work is defined by a commitment to craft\, materiality\, and the thoughtful relationship between form\, comfort\, and environment. \n  \n \nWilliam Hefner \nWilliam Hefner is a fifth-generation Californian and the founder of the architecture and design firm Studio William Hefner. Established in 1989 in Los Angeles\, the practice encompasses new and restoration architecture\, interior and furniture design\, and landscape architecture and design\, with a focus on luxury homes for modern living. Known for his versatility in both traditional and modernist architecture\, William has created landmark estates in a range of styles that share a devotion to craft and detail. His interest in environmental building has led to the application of sustainable practices throughout his portfolio. His work has been widely published in design books and magazines in the United States and abroad\, including Architectural Digest\, Wall Street Journal\, and beyond. William is the author of three books\, California Homes\, California Homes II\, and Chateau des Fleurs\, with a fourth set to be released in Spring 2027 with Rizzoli. He and his family split their time between Los Angeles and Montecito. \n  \n \nCory Grosser \nCory Grosser is an American product designer\, interior architect\, and art director. He is known for Happy Minimalism™\, a design philosophy centered on clarity\, reduction\, and optimism. A professor at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena\, Grosser’s work focuses on how design decisions shape human behavior\, understanding\, and trust. \n  \nLOCATION\nTribù Flagship Store LA \n8935 Beverly Blvd\, West Hollywood\, CA 90048 \n  \nPARKING\nPlenty of parking is available in the Tribù parking lot. \n  \nTICKET PURCHASE INSTRUCTIONS & SUPPORT\n\n*Note to all registrants: When purchasing a ticket\, please double check that the address + zip code that you provide matches the billing information on the card you are using.* \nTo purchase a ticket\, please select the quantity of tickets you want next to the proper ticket tier using the + sign\, and then select “Get Tickets.” \n  \nTHANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR!
