Highly regarded as an industry leader with 35 years of experience in affordable housing and community development\, she possesses deep expertise in advancing public policy at the local\, state\, and federal levels. \nPrior to joining the Network\, Robin led Abode Communities\, a top 50 affordable housing developer nationwide and premier provider of environmentally sustainable affordable housing in California. She has served on numerous boards\, task forces\, and advisory bodies to advocate for resources\, programs\, and policies that support the preservation and production of affordable housing\, including her tenure as board chair of HPN’s national network from 2016-2022\, The Community Development Trust (CDT)\, and the Low Income Investment Fund. At Community Coalition for over 12 years\, Elhawary was mentored by Mayor Karen Bass and City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson and served as a youth organizer\, recruiting and developing future leaders of the social justice movement. Her achievements include helping establish the Fremont High School Wellness Center to reduce health disparities in a medically underserved neighborhood and securing the School Climate Bill of Rights to reduce racial profiling in schools. \nElhawary played a pivotal role in founding the Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice\, shaping its curriculum and first graduating class. Her work reflects her deep commitment to improving outcomes for women and young people of color while fostering Black/Brown solidarity. \nAssemblymember Elhawary holds a bachelor’s degree from UCLA and a master’s from Harvard Graduate School of Education.
