She is the Co-Chair of the Congressional Brazil Caucus\, and a Whip and Outreach Co-Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus. \nIn Congress\, Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove aspires to L.E.A.D. by prioritizing Land\, Economic Justice\, Art\, and Democracy. DESCRIPTION:AIA|LA City Leaders Breakfast Reception w/ Ben Allen – California State Senator\, District #24\n2024 City Leaders Breakfast Series Presented By: Gannett Fleming \nThe 2024 AIA|LA City Leaders Breakfast Series allows architects & designers and other community stakeholders to meet directly with key individuals transforming Los Angeles in a roundtable setting to discuss innovative ideas to ensure a healthy\, sustainable\, and economically competitive future. \n \nBen Allen – California State Senator\, District #24\nCalifornia State Senator Ben Allen represents the 24th Senate District\, covering the Westside\, Hollywood\, South Bay\, and Santa Monica Mountains communities of Los Angeles County. Ben was first elected in 2014 and is now serving his third term in the State Senate. \nBen chairs the Senate’s Environmental Quality Committee and co-chairs the Legislature’s Environmental Caucus\, is a member of the Legislative Jewish Caucus\, chairs the Legislature’s Joint Committee on the Arts\, and the Senate Select Committee on Aerospace and Defense. He previously served as Chair of the Education Committee (2017-2019) and Chair of the Elections and Constitutional Amendments Committee (2015-2016). \nBen has thrown himself into the important work of state government\, focusing on wise decision-making and pushing for reforms that address systemic inadequacies in our state. He has authored nearly 60 new laws in various areas\, from environmental protection to electoral reform. \nDuring his first two terms in the Senate\, fighting the climate crisis and protecting our state’s precious natural resources have been among Ben’s top priorities. CalMatters recently recognized him as one of the Legislature’s foremost leaders in the field of environmental protection. He authored SB 54\, groundbreaking legislation to address plastic pollution\, which Governor Newsom signed into law to international acclaim. The New York Times called SB 54 “the most sweeping restrictions on plastics in the nation” and suggested the legislation is “another route for curbing carbon emissions and trying to sidestep the worst consequences of global warming” after the Supreme Court gutted the federal government’s power to regulate carbon emissions. As Chair of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee\, Ben worked with his colleagues to pass a powerful climate package requiring the state to become carbon-neutral by 2045 and produce 90% of its electricity from clean sources by 2035\, among other measures. A member of the Ocean Protection Council and Coastal Conservancy\, he has led a successful effort to phase out a dangerous carcinogen in firefighting foam\, crafted a compromise to phase out destructive trawling gear\, and brokered a major bipartisan compromise that lessened the environmental impact of off-highway vehicle use at state facilities. “If only Congress could work out such compromises\,” wrote the Sacramento Bee editorial board about the bill. \nAmong his efforts to reform California campaign finance and elections laws\, Ben authored the landmark Voter’s Choice Act of 2016 to implement more flexibility in how and where to vote\, creating the vote center model used in the 2020 elections\, which resulted in significantly increased voter turnout. Ben also has been a leader for campaign transparency\, and was a leader in passing the Disclose Act and Petition Disclose Act and other transparency measures that have dramatically improved the disclosure of donors to political causes for the public. The California Clean Money Campaign has routinely ranked him top in the Legislature for his commitment to clean money political reform. \nAn advocate for the Golden State’s continued leadership in arts and entertainment\, Ben is a member of the California Film Commission. He was part of a legislative effort to extend the Film & TV Tax Credit Program to further support and invest in California’s unrivaled film industry. Ben also authored the law that reinstated teaching credentials for theatre and dance educators\, and he continues to fight for expanded access to the arts in schools and underserved communities. Ben has been a champion for science and was a joint author of the state’s groundbreaking law that increased vaccination rates among school children. \nPrior to his election to the Senate\, Ben served as President of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education\, lecturer at UCLA Law School\, and worked as an attorney at the law firms of Bryan Cave LLP and Richardson & Patel and at the nonprofit Spark Program. While at law school\, Ben served as the voting student member of the University of California Board of Regents and was a summer judicial clerk with the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. She works with property developers and owners providing comprehensive land use counsel from the earliest stages of strategic project planning through the entitlement process and\, if necessary\, defense of any legal challenge. \nElizabeth represents clients in connection with development projects of all sizes across a broad range of uses\, including multi-family residential\, office/commercial\, master-planned communities\, entertainment centers\, hotels\, institutional facilities\, energy and public infrastructure. He founded Agency Artifact (MBE) as a civic design studio\, creating ambitious placemaking experiences. He is currently leading projects such as the Fairplex Specific Plan with over 10\,000 units of housing and re-envisioning the Norwalk Civic Center as a mixed-use entertainment destination with affordable housing. He has over a decade of both local and international experience designing urban parks\, public art\, large-scale housing projects and regenerative infrastructure. Prior to founding Agency Artifact\, he led projects at Rios\, Walt Disney Imagineering\, SOM and the public art program at LA METRO. Chris was a Design Principal at the Jerde Partnership and served as a Vice President for the organization with over 100 designers working globally.\n \nHe believes that urban design should be transparent and community-based. Chris is an active public speaker\, researcher and educator on topics related to public space and the future of cities. Our panel consists of experienced architects and designers who started their own business in this industry. We will discuss the challenges and obstacles of starting a business in these fields and the ways to overcome them. \nSpeakers: \n \nPoonam Sharma\, Principal\, LOC Architects \nPoonam Sharma is a co-founder of LOC Architects\, a multi-disciplinary\, award-winning architecture firm that is based in Los Angeles since 2006. Poonam received her undergraduate degree in Literature from Scripps College in 1995 and her Masters of Architecture degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture in 2001. Through an experimental and rigorous approach to design\, LOC has received several design awards and publications nationally. \n \nJulia Molloy Gallagher\, AIA\, Founder\, JMGA \nJulia Molloy Gallagher is a serial entrepreneur; she co-founded XLXS\, the sustainable design collective with Taka Sarui in 2007\, co-founded Future Goose real estate and film production company with actor and partner Anthony Aguilar in 2012\, founded the licensed architecture and design firm Julia Molloy Gallagher Architecture PLLC in Brooklyn in 2017\, and established Julia Ann Gallagher Architect\, PC in Hawthorne\, California in 2024. \n \nYong K Kim\, AIA\, Urban Design Director\, LVL Collaborative \nYongKim is a resilience-focused urban designer and co-founder of LVL Collaborative\, an interdisciplinary design consultancy firm based in Los Angeles. With over 20 years of multidisciplinary experience in architecture\, landscape architecture\, and urban design\, Yong brings a holistic design approach that fosters synergies among ecological resilience\, urban systems\, and cultural equity. He operates at the convergence of various scales and typologies\, cultivating opportunities for integrated design processes and resilient design strategies. Yong received his BFA and BArch degrees from Rhode Island School of Design\, and a MAUD degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design. \n \nLuis Tena\, Assoc. AIA\, Founder and Managing Principal of Luis Tena Design \nLuis Tena founded his solo design practice\, Luis Tena Design\, in November 2019. Originally from Pamplona\, Spain\, he moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to work at WHY Architecture. Surfing\, one of Luis’ main passions alongside architecture\, inspired him to join Studio PCH\, a boutique design firm in Malibu. This location allowed him to surf almost every day before work. DESCRIPTION:The 2024 AIA|LA and LACP Urban Design Review Sessions\nArchitects & designers passionate about improving the design quality of newly proposed projects throughout the City of Los Angeles are encouraged to participate in the AIA|LA & Los Angeles City Planning (LACP) Professional Volunteer Program (PVP). \nPLEASE REGISTER HERE.\nWHAT:\nIn 2024\, we will be coordinating thirt-six urban design review sessions\, which will serve as opportunities for leading design talent to help the Los Angles City Planning’s Urban Design Studio critically review upcoming projects throughout the City.   \nTO PREPARE:  The following resources are helpful to review in advance to become more familiar with the Urban Design Studio’s three design approaches.  \n\nCitywide Design Guidelines\nAbove-Grade Parking Advisory\n\nWHY:\nThe review sessions will will enable a rotating pool of architects and designers the opportunity to provide insightful and critical design feedback on pending projects that will be reviewed by the Planning Commission.
