DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT: You must be present for the entire seminar in order to receive AIA and California MCE credit. \nADA Seminar: Stepping Thru The Existing Building – Access Within & Without\n \npresented by Janis Kent\, FAIA\, CASp\, \nStepping Thru Accessibility \nThe nature of our practice has changed with a higher proportion of renovation and re-use. Under the ADA Standards there are differing requirements for new construction versus alteration. Since these are federal laws local public agencies can only offer limited direction. We will review criteria for existing facilities in regards to scoping to acquire a better understanding of the implications of the law and how it applies\, as well as cover a range of concepts such as Title II vs Title III entities\, Program Accessibility vs Barrier Removal\, Proportional Spending\, Safe Harbor\, and Path of Travel obligations. \nSUMMARY \nAn in-depth look for implementing ADAS on existing projects whether or not construction is actually scheduled – including alteration requirements for public facilities and places of public accommodation from Program Accessibility to Barrier Removal. \nLearning Units: Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) on ADA for California licensees\nAIA CES: Applied For \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n• Understand differences between Public Facilities and Places of Public Accommodation\n• Review the distinctions between Program Accessibility vs Barrier Removal and their impact\n• Learn about Proportional Spending and Disproportionality with its application to Path of Travel requirements\n• Overview Safe Harbor and when it can or can not be applied to existing elements \nThis seminar takes place IN PERSON on Friday May 9 from 9:30am to 3:30pm at the AIA|LA and ACLA Center for Communities Los Angeles\, 4450 W Adams Blvd\, Los Angeles 90016. \nThe training is five hours with an hour break. She has given presentations on Accessibility at numerous venues from Dwell On Design in Los Angeles\, to Design DC in Washington\, at the National ADA Symposium in Texas and Georgia\, and the National AIA Conventions in Boston\, New York City\, Atlanta\, Philadelphia\, Chicago\, New Orleans\, Orlando\, and Las Vegas. Her most-recent book\, published by Wiley – ‘ADA in Details – Interpreting the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design’ came out in 2017\, with the 2nd edition in 2023\, which has been expanded and updated to include the 2021 IBC and the 2017 ICC A117.1\, all integrated and color-coded. \nMs. Kent is designated a Subject Matter Expert (SME) by the California Division of the State Architect\, a Certified Access Specialist\, and serves on the committee to develop the California state CASp exams. She has conducted seminars for the Nevada State Board of Architecture\, Interior\, and Residential Design and has presented to business associations including AIA Chapters\, California Hotel & Lodging Association (CHLA)\, US Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT)\, Manufactured Housing Educational Trust (MHET)\, California Public Parking Association (CPPA)\, the Southern California Association of Non-Profit Housing (SCANPH)\, the University of California – Construction Services\, the California State University – Capital Planning Design and Construction\, Construction Specifications Institute (CSI-LA)\, the ICC Orange Empire Chapter\, and the CSI National Convention – Construct\, and the California Division of the State Architect (DSA). \nMs. Kent is a licensed California Architect\, and has been involved in the specialized field of Accessibility since the mid-1980’s. Gay is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Neighborhood Housing Services of Los Angeles County (NHS)\, a non-profit lender\, developer\, and neighborhood revitalization corporation. She has worked in the community development field for over 30 years\, focusing her efforts on rebuilding impoverished communities and creating mechanisms for community empowerment and ownership. She is a member of the NeighborWorks® National Community Initiatives Advisory Committee\, Chair of the African Diaspora\, and a member of several bank advisory councils. Some of her activities have included serving as Chair of the California Organized Investment Network (COIN)\, former board member of the National NeighborWorks® Association\, the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA)\, and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco\, Los Angeles Branch. Ms. Gay has worked for NHS since 1990\, holds an MBA degree from Pepperdine University\, and a B.S. degree in Development\, Resource and Consumer Economics from the University of California at Davis. SUMMARY:SAC Health Brier Campus Tour
DESCRIPTION:SAC Health Brier Medical is a new 280\,000 SF five-story adaptive reuse outpatient facility in San Bernardino\, CA. \nAs the nation’s largest specialty-based and teaching health center\, SAC Health is committed to providing health equity for underserved populations. The mission of the SAC Health System is to provide vulnerable populations with an environment for patient healing and community empowerment. Recently completed phase-1 scope of the project includes 6 primary and specialty clinics\, a school of dentistry\, after hours clinic with Imaging services as well as community resource center to provide free counseling and support services for the local community. \nSAC Health Brier Project employed a unique approach to minimizing carbon footprint during construction. The original structure was designed as a bank call center with a raised floor system. The owner and project team’s goal were to minimize intervention and alteration of the existing structure and utilize the existing structure and systems to their full capacity. As a result\, the team came up with solutions to maintain existing systems and reuse the core and shell of the building without significant alterations. \n  \nLearning Objectives \nAIA CES: 2 LU|HSW \nAdaptive Reuse in Healthcare Design – Participants will examine how the SAC Health Brier Medical project successfully transformed a former bank call center into a state-of-the-art outpatient medical facility\, maximizing the use of existing infrastructure while minimizing costly structural modifications. \nEnvironmental and Sustainability Benefits – Participants will explore how the project’s adaptive reuse approach significantly reduced its carbon footprint by preserving key building components\, optimizing existing systems\, and employing sustainable construction practices. \nAdvancing Health Equity for Underserved Populations – Participants will be able to explain how SAC Health’s mission-driven approach provides best-in-class specialty and primary care services to vulnerable communities\, integrating innovative solutions for accessibility and comprehensive patient support. \nSpecialty and Teaching Institution Design Considerations – Participants will become familiar with the unique facility requirements of a specialty-based teaching health center\, including the integration of medical training spaces\, advanced imaging services\, and a dental school within a multidisciplinary outpatient setting. \n  \nLocation & Parking Info \nLocations for carpooling from LA will be sent with the event confirmation email- \nPlease email ken@lightbuilddesign.com if you volunteer to drive. \nParking info forthcoming.

How can the design community plug in? \nForum Background:\nWith a series of mega-events coming to LA over the next decade\, including the FIFA World Cup in 2026 and the Olympics & Paralympics in 2028\, LA has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make radical improvements in our public realm that can have a lasting legacy for generations to come. The sad truth is that there is no clear organizing authority across LA County\, and no comprehensive plan to realize the legacy public realm improvements we were hoping for. We have simply run out of time to wait around for the cavalry… We are the cavalry! \nThis is why Los Angeles Tomorrow was launched. Our mission is to facilitate and accelerate community-powered public space improvements and neighborhood activations across LA County in advance of the series of mega-events to ensure a legacy of prosperity for all Angelenos. This is a grassroots effort\, working with local communities in historically underinvested neighborhoods to identify the projects that are already in the early stages of concept ideation and then connect them to the resources (funding\, technical services\, and agency partners) needed to realize these visions in an expedited way. \nTo do this work\, we need all hands on deck!! We are building a big-tent coalition—including community partners\, public partners\, funding partners\, and technical / design partners—to help facilitate a wide range of neighborhood-based quick-build\, low-investment\, and high-impact design interventions. We want to showcase the power of design and specifically the LA-based design community\, which has the skills\, creativity\, and passion needed to help implement high-quality community-based projects. \nForum Objectives:\nThis forum will explore the many different partnership opportunities for everyone interested in this mission! We will first share a brief overview of our mission\, process\, and projects\, and then we will dive into an interactive discussion about the specific ways that design professionals can collaborate with us and communities across LA County. With over 300 professionals in the LA Office\, she played a critical role in office management\, project pursuits\, and Arup’s role in external markets. She ran for California State Senate\, District 25 in 2016\, co-founded her own company and non-profit\, and served as the Executive Director of the Urban Land Institute\, Los Angeles District Council (ULI LA). She is a National Board member of Mercy Housing and a USC Adjunct Associate Professor. \n \nAaron Paley – Co-Founder & Strategic Director\, Los Angeles Tomorrow \nFor over four decades\, Aaron has focused on how Angelenos experience and use public space – through temporary and permanent interventions – and the nexus of event production\, arts\, community\, culture\, transportation\, urban planning\, and policy. He co-founded Community Arts Resources (CARS) with Katie Bergin to “create unique experiences where art\, culture\, community and civic life collide.” CARS incubated and co-developed CicLAvia where he served as its founding director from 2010 to 2015. Ben was first elected in 2014 and is now serving his third term in the State Senate. \nBen chairs the Senate’s Environmental Quality Committee and co-chairs the Legislature’s Environmental Caucus\, is a member of the Legislative Jewish Caucus\, chairs the Legislature’s Joint Committee on the Arts\, and the Senate Select Committee on Aerospace and Defense. He previously served as Chair of the Education Committee (2017-2019) and Chair of the Elections and Constitutional Amendments Committee (2015-2016). \nBen has thrown himself into the important work of state government\, focusing on wise decision-making and pushing for reforms that address systemic inadequacies in our state. He has authored nearly 60 new laws in various areas\, from environmental protection to electoral reform. \nDuring his first two terms in the Senate\, fighting the climate crisis and protecting our state’s precious natural resources have been among Ben’s top priorities. CalMatters recently recognized him as one of the Legislature’s foremost leaders in the field of environmental protection. He authored SB 54\, groundbreaking legislation to address plastic pollution\, which Governor Newsom signed into law to international acclaim. The New York Times called SB 54 “the most sweeping restrictions on plastics in the nation” and suggested the legislation is “another route for curbing carbon emissions and trying to sidestep the worst consequences of global warming” after the Supreme Court gutted the federal government’s power to regulate carbon emissions. As Chair of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee\, Ben worked with his colleagues to pass a powerful climate package requiring the state to become carbon-neutral by 2045 and produce 90% of its electricity from clean sources by 2035\, among other measures. A member of the Ocean Protection Council and Coastal Conservancy\, he has led a successful effort to phase out a dangerous carcinogen in firefighting foam\, crafted a compromise to phase out destructive trawling gear\, and brokered a major bipartisan compromise that lessened the environmental impact of off-highway vehicle use at state facilities. “If only Congress could work out such compromises\,” wrote the Sacramento Bee editorial board about the bill. \nAmong his efforts to reform California campaign finance and elections laws\, Ben authored the landmark Voter’s Choice Act of 2016 to implement more flexibility in how and where to vote\, creating the vote center model used in the 2020 elections\, which resulted in significantly increased voter turnout. Ben also has been a leader for campaign transparency\, and was a leader in passing the Disclose Act and Petition Disclose Act and other transparency measures that have dramatically improved the disclosure of donors to political causes for the public. The California Clean Money Campaign has routinely ranked him top in the Legislature for his commitment to clean money political reform. \nAn advocate for the Golden State’s continued leadership in arts and entertainment\, Ben is a member of the California Film Commission. He was part of a legislative effort to extend the Film & TV Tax Credit Program to further support and invest in California’s unrivaled film industry. Ben also authored the law that reinstated teaching credentials for theatre and dance educators\, and he continues to fight for expanded access to the arts in schools and underserved communities. Ben has been a champion for science and was a joint author of the state’s groundbreaking law that increased vaccination rates among school children. \nPrior to his election to the Senate\, Ben served as President of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education\, lecturer at UCLA Law School\, and worked as an attorney at the law firms of Bryan Cave LLP and Richardson & Patel and at the nonprofit Spark Program. While at law school\, Ben served as the voting student member of the University of California Board of Regents and was a summer judicial clerk with the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Prior to law school\, Ben worked in Washington DC for the Latin American team of the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI)\, and then as Communications Director for Congressman Jose Serrano (D-NY). \nBen grew up in the 24th Senate District and attended public schools\, graduating from Santa Monica High School in 1996. Quijada de Franke is the Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) of Facilities\, Planning\, and Sustainability at the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD). She is a California-Licensed Professional Engineer with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering – Structures- and a Master of Business and Administration. \nMs. Quijada has more than 26 years of experience in engineering\, planning\, and management and joined LACCD in 2014 as a Facilities Project Manager. She was promoted to Director of the Facilities\, Planning\, and Development (FPD) Department in 2020 and advanced to her current role in 2023. \nMs. Quijada is dedicated to fulfilling LACCD’s vision of providing high-quality and easily accessible educational opportunities for students. She believes in celebrating the area’s diverse cultures and strengthening the regional economy. As such\, her responsibility is to provide state-of-the-art facilities that foster a productive learning environment for all students\, which entails enhancing\, restoring\, or expanding the health and functionality of 742 buildings (11.6 million OGSF) across LACCD’s nine colleges and satellite campuses. \nAs an AVC\, Ms. Quijada is helping LACCD meet the sustainability goals of eliminating carbon-based electricity consumption by 2030 and other carbon-based energy use by 2040 and replacing it with clean\, renewable\, and sustainable energy sources. To this end\, she oversees the development and implementation of more than 300 Clean Energy projects\, Schedule Maintenance Projects (SMPs)\, and Deferred Maintenance projects. \nBefore joining LACCD\, Ms. Quijada worked in the energy industry on national and international oil and nuclear power infrastructure projects. She developed seismic hazard maps to design new structures and retrofit existing infrastructure. Dr. G drives organizations in design and construction to go beyond DEI talk by taking actionable steps to create culturally diverse\, equitable\, and inclusive workplaces.  Dr. G holds two doctorate degrees from the University of La Verne\, a D.P.A. in Public Administration\, an Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership\, an MBA from the University of Phoenix\, an Undergraduate degree from Mount Saint Mary’s University (MSMU)\, and an Executive Certified Master Compliance Administrator (ECMCA) from Morgan State University. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nIsmar Enriquez\, AIA\, LFA\, LEED AP – Member\, AIA|LA Board of Directors & Project Manager\, Practice \nIsmar has been practicing for 15 years and he is currently a Senior Associate and Senior Project Architect\, focusing on ending the housing crisis by creating places that foster social\, equitable\, and sustainable communities. \nAs the Chair of the 2×8 Student Scholarship and Exhibition committee in 2017\, Ismar helped bring back this event that has awarded over $100\,000 in scholarships. 2×8 is now the flagship event for Architecture for Communities Los Angeles\, an AIA|LA sibling non-profit that was formed to communicate the value of design to all people. Ismar has led discussions in past AIA conferences and other non-profit organizations addressing the housing crisis\, climate change\, and equity and inclusion. He has volunteered as a mentor and participates in critiques in local schools. He has also supported the LA Mayor’s Office to fund MBE in underserved areas during the pandemic through pro-bono services. As the 2021 COTE Chair\, Ismar also led issues of carbon neutrality\, resiliency\, climate justice\, and equity. In addition to the sustainability initiatives\, and is involved in government policy change and advocacy efforts across the State.

Our panel consists of experienced architects and designers who started their own business in this industry. We will discuss the challenges and obstacles of starting a business in these fields and the ways to overcome them. \nSpeakers: \n \nPoonam Sharma\, Principal\, LOC Architects \nPoonam Sharma is a co-founder of LOC Architects\, a multi-disciplinary\, award-winning architecture firm that is based in Los Angeles since 2006. Poonam received her undergraduate degree in Literature from Scripps College in 1995 and her Masters of Architecture degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture in 2001. Through an experimental and rigorous approach to design\, LOC has received several design awards and publications nationally. \n \nJulia Molloy Gallagher\, AIA\, Founder\, JMGA \nJulia Molloy Gallagher is a serial entrepreneur; she co-founded XLXS\, the sustainable design collective with Taka Sarui in 2007\, co-founded Future Goose real estate and film production company with actor and partner Anthony Aguilar in 2012\, founded the licensed architecture and design firm Julia Molloy Gallagher Architecture PLLC in Brooklyn in 2017\, and established Julia Ann Gallagher Architect\, PC in Hawthorne\, California in 2024. \n \nYong K Kim\, AIA\, Urban Design Director\, LVL Collaborative \nYongKim is a resilience-focused urban designer and co-founder of LVL Collaborative\, an interdisciplinary design consultancy firm based in Los Angeles. With over 20 years of multidisciplinary experience in architecture\, landscape architecture\, and urban design\, Yong brings a holistic design approach that fosters synergies among ecological resilience\, urban systems\, and cultural equity. He operates at the convergence of various scales and typologies\, cultivating opportunities for integrated design processes and resilient design strategies. Yong received his BFA and BArch degrees from Rhode Island School of Design\, and a MAUD degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design. \n \nLuis Tena\, Assoc. AIA\, Founder and Managing Principal of Luis Tena Design \nLuis Tena founded his solo design practice\, Luis Tena Design\, in November 2019. Originally from Pamplona\, Spain\, he moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to work at WHY Architecture. Surfing\, one of Luis’ main passions alongside architecture\, inspired him to join Studio PCH\, a boutique design firm in Malibu. This location allowed him to surf almost every day before work.
