The Getty Center occupies a chaparral-covered hilltop that stretches along the San Diego Freeway, then juts south from the Santa Monica Mountains into the residential neighborhood of Brentwood. The layout of the complex was largely determined by the contours of the elevated site, which affords spectacular views over the city, the mountains and ocean. The layout is based on an interplay between the angle of intersection and the Los Angeles grid, together with a number of curvilinear forms derived from the specific topography.
