Students, recent graduates, emerging professionals and architects are all welcome to participate!
No formal training or experience is required, however, an interest in design, architecture or landscaping is necessary. The main qualifications are enthusiasm for architecture, a commitment to sharing architectural information with visitors and a willingness to ask questions and lead discussions.
AIA| LA Home Tour Docents are passionate about architecture and enthusiastic about communicating this passion to the general public.
Benefits of volunteering as a Docent for AIA| LA Home Tours
- Free admission to all homes on the Home Tours (a $75 value)
- One on one talks with the home designers
- Network with people in your profession
How it works:
Each docent is assigned a home at a particular shift. Docents supervise the assigned area and as visitors come by, they provide answers to questions.
Docents are free to visit the other homes immediately before or after their assigned shift.
If you volunteer for the morning shift you will be at your assigned location from 10:15 AM to 1:45 PM and will be able to see the other homes included in the tour from 1:45 PM to 4:00 PM. Similarly, if you volunteer for the afternoon shift you will be able to tour all homes from 11:00 AM to 1:15 PM at which time you will report to your assigned location.
10:15 AM - 1:45 PM (Docent at Assigned Home)
1:45 PM - 4:00 PM (Tour Other Homes)
11:00 AM - 1:15 PM (Tour Other Homes)
1:45 PM - 4:00 PM (Docent at Assigned Home)
THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE VOLUNTEERING
If you are considering being a volunteer/docent, please keep in mind that our homeowners, other docents and tour attendees will depend on you to be at your assigned location on time. If you don't show up or arrive late, other docents will have to carry the weight or we will have to close off rooms and people will miss seeing parts of the house.
Please ensure that you arrive on time (10:15 AM SHARP for the morning shift & 1:15 PM SHARP for the afternoon shift)
Please plan to work your entire shift (until 1:45 PM for the morning shift and 4:00 PM for the afternoon shift)
