PLAYWRIGHT SAFDIE EXPLORES THE RESIDUAL EFFECTS OF THE HOLOCAUST THROUGH ARCHITECTURE IN READING OF LATEST PLAY
Oren Safdie's A FALSE SOLUTION - a play that finds a famous architect wrestling with his design for a new holocaust museum in Poland - has its first public reading at The Blank Theatre Co. on 25 April 2011 at 8:00 PM.
The third in a trilogy set in the world of contemporary architecture; A FALSE SOLUTION introduces Anton Seligman, a well-established German-Jewish architect, right after he's won a competition to design a new holocaust museum in Poland. All is proceeding according to plan until he encounters Linda Johansson, a striking young summer intern who challenges his resolve, and throws everything he stands for into question. The effects of war, religious identity and sexual politics loom large over this intimate encounter that also gives insight into the architect's creative process.
Safdie's two previous plays set in the world of contemporary architecture - PRIVATE JOKES, PUBLIC PLACES & THE BILBAO EFFECT - received critical praise when they opened Off-Broadway in New York:
DJR Bruckner of The New York Times wrote (of PJPP), "A biting send-up of architects, a battle of wits between four sharply defined characters. The verbal dexterity alone is mesmerizing. An hour and a quarter of laughter." The New Yorker called it, "A scream, a short, tight play, and an X-acto-blade sharp comedy. Safdie exposes the emperor's new blueprints for all to see."
Paul Goldberger of The New Yorker wrote (of BILBAO) "A hilarious send-up of idiotic architect-speak, and a reminder of the gap between the public's demand that buildings be ever more exciting, and their need to fulfill certain practical functions." The Wall Street Journal expounded: "Both funny and cruelly smart in its portrayal of the lunatic excesses of the more extreme varieties of starchitecture."
A FALSE SOLUTION is commissioned by the Canada Council for the Arts.
Oren Safdie attended the Graduate School of Architecture at Columbia University before turning his attention to writing. He is a playwright-in-residence at La MaMa E.T.C. in New York and until recently was the Artistic Director of the Malibu Stage Co. in L.A. where PRIVATE JOKES, PUBLIC PLACES first debuted before running Off-Broadway. His next play, THE LAST WORD ran off-Broadway in 2007 and starred two-time Emmy Award Winner Daniel J. Travanti ("Hill Street Blues"). Other plays include WEST BANK, UK, JEWS & JESUS, FIDDLER SUB-TERRAIN, sMOTHER and LA COMPAGNIE, which he developed into a half-hour pilot for CBS. As a screenwriter, Oren scripted the film YOU CAN THANK ME LATER starring Ellen Burstyn and the Israeli film BITTERSWEET. Oren has written for METROPOLIS, DWELL, BEYOND and THE NEW REPUBLIC. His most recent play, THE BILBAO EFFECT, opened in May 2010 at the AIA Center for Architecture - New York.
