The City of Los Angeles' Office of Historic Resources is excited to announce new opportunities to participate in the City's HPOZ (HistoricPreservation Overlay Zone) Program with open positions on several of our HPOZ Boards. HPOZ Boards work in partnership with Office of Historic Resources staff and are key to the continued success of the City's robust historic district program. Currently, with 29 adopted HPOZs and an ambitious program to expand protections into additional neighborhoods, we are searching for historic preservation professionals and those passionate about neighborhood preservation who are willing to volunteer their time and lend their expertise. This is a great opportunity to learn about Los Angeles' unique and cherished neighborhoods.
What is the role of the HPOZ Board?
The HPOZ Board plays a critical role in helping to shape projects and guide applicants in the restoration and rehabilitation of historic buildings. The Board serves as a resource to the City and the district as a whole. HPOZ Boards review applications for rehabilitation, additions, and new construction and serve in an advisory role to the City Planning Department.
The expertise of licensed Architects, Architectural Historians, and those knowledgeable about historic preservation principals is particularly needed on our Boards to ensure the highest quality of design and implementation of best practices in rehabilitation, repair, and new construction.

- Lafayette Square (South LA)
- Lincoln Heights (Northeast LA)
- Miracle Mile North (Beverly-Grove area)
- North University Park (near USC)
- Country Club Park-Wilshire Park-Windsor Village (Mid-City area)
- Windsor Square (near Hancock Park)
What are the requirements for serving as a Board member?
Two members of the five-member Board are appointed by the City's Cultural Heritage Commission. One boardmember must be an architect licensed by the State of California; the other must be a Renter or Owner of property in the Preservation Zone. All members should have knowledge of and interest in the culture, structures, sites, history and architecture of the HPOZ area, and if possible, experience in historic preservation.
What type of time commitment is involved?
Boardmembers serve a term of four years. HPOZ Board meetings are regularly scheduled twice each month. More active historic districts meet regularly; others meet quarterly or only a handful of times per year, depending on the number of applications.
Will training be provided to new Boardmembers?Department staff will provide training and handbook materials to all new Boardmembers prior to their first meeting.
