RE: Edible Gardens in Parkways

Dear Councilmember Wesson:

On behalf of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|LA), we are writing to express our strong appreciation and support for your recent efforts to save Ron Finley's edible garden on Exposition Boulevard.

Edible gardens and urban farms help provide access to safe, healthy and affordable food to underserved neighborhoods throughout our City. They enliven our streetscapes and add verdancy to our urban realm. Edible gardens educate children about the sources of their diets and encourage more people to eat healthier and more sustainably. It's also essential that we learn to re-introduce local food production back into our City. Regionally, it's paramount to our economy and environment.

With the health of our community in mind, AIA|LA strongly recommends that The City of Los Angeles revise the Parkway Landscaping regulations, as currently determined by Council File 08-3127 - which happens to expire in December 2011. Now is the perfect time to revisit the parkway regulations and craft an ordinance that encourages more neighborhoods to nurture healthy, edible gardens in their communities.

The AIA|LA looks forward to lending outreach resources and working with your office more closely to craft a motion that directs the Bureau of Engineering and the Bureau of Street Services (in tandem with the Department of City Planning) to enable more communities to foster edible urban gardens on the City's parkways and open spaces.

Very truly yours,

Nicci Solomons, Hon. AIACC
