AIA|LA Kick-Off Board Member Meeting a Success

The American Institute of Architects Los Angeles Chapter, had its first board member meeting of the year Saturday, January 29, 2011. Held at Hodgetts and Fung architecture firm in Culver City, Board members and AIA|LA staff were in attendance.

Beginning by welcoming the new Chapter President, Ming Fung, AIA and the Board of Directors, the kick-off covered the Chapter goals for the upcoming year as well as future plans for an Architecture and Urban Design Center in Los Angeles.

Already in preliminary procedures, the Architecture and Urban Design Center's mission is to increase the value of architecture, planning and urban design in Southern California. The center will engage members of the public and design professions in education and dialogue about the importance of the built environment.

The meeting discussed logistics in completing the center, such as location, campaigning, affiliate organizations, hiring of a campaign director and budgets. Ideally the center would like to open its doors to the Los Angeles public in 2017.

The meeting also highlighted issues important to AIA|LA such as public advocacy and professional development. One such issue was the AIA California Council's position statement on redevelopment in California, an issue that members passionately debated.

The day came to a close with a Portfolio breakout session proved useful in discussing goals for the many Committees AIA|LA board members oversee.

The day retreat proved successful with returning members, new members and staff alike socializing and planning AIA|LA's 2011 activities.
