AIA|LA Counts Down to the 2011 Design Awards Ceremony and Party presented by Italian Living Umbria with Jonathan Cowan, husband to the recipient of the Community Contribution Presidential Honor Award, the late John Chase, Assoc. AIA
The Community Contribution Award recognizes an individual whose personal and professional achievements throughout his/her career speak to a commitment to the profession of architecture as a whole, with an enduring legacy of dedication that will enrich generations of architects to come. We can think of no other more deserving to be honored than the late, John Chase, West Hollywood's Urban Designer, who passed away last August 2010.
AIA Los Angeles interviewed John's husband, Jonathan Cowen about his husband's work and what he feels his husband would have thought about receiving an AIA|LA Presidential Honor.
What was your impression of John Chase's work?
My first impression of my husband's work was his involvement of the reconstruction of the West Hollywood portion of Santa Monica blvd. My understanding was that as an Urban Designer, John helped architects relate their projects to the existing or planned surrounding environment.
What was John's dedication to urban design and to the built environment?
John & I used to walk a lot. We used public transportation in Los Angeles frequently. It's the best way to experience the urban landscape.
What does receiving this award on John's behalf mean to you? In your opinion, what would it have meant to him?
To me, this award validates my husband's work and his dedication to urban design. I can only guess this would have meant a lot to him if he were still alive.
