What are the mayoral candidate's aesthetic values? How will they reinforce the value of architecture in today's civic discourse?

The American Institute of Architects, Los Angeles (AIA|LA) organized another compelling evening last Friday, with Mayoral Candidate Austin Beutner. Facing a crowd that included new urbanists, transportation activists, community advocates, and city hall insiders, Beutner had to answer tough questions.

The following questions were asked by audience members:

  • Will you support the proposal to build a street-car running along Broadway and through Downtown LA?
  • Is traffic even solvable?
  • Given that over 70% of our City's tax dollars support police and fire services, do you see the possiblity of at least a modest shift towards increasing the amount of money going towards quality of life improvements?
  • You alluded to the difficulty and challenges of effecting positive change in our city because of the "Angeleno" culture. How would you incentivize automobile-centric Angelenos to better embrace active transportation and mass transit?
  • What is the Los Angeles of the 21st century?
  • What are your thoughts in regards to the Hollywood Community Plan? Is this a template for moving the City forward?

Stay tuned for this week's forum with Kevin James. Do you know his favorite city outside of Los Angeles? Who he thinks the steward of the LA built environment is? How would he encourage better design and a broader application of good design in the city? Come discover his answers to all these questions and more at the next AIA|LA Mayoral Candidate Forums, Friday, March 2nd!
