AIA|LA Encourages LAUSD and LACCD to each hire a District Architect to Oversee Capital Improvement Programs

For Immediate Release

Los Angeles, CA - March 21, 2011 - The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|LA) sent letters today to the LAUSD Board of Education and the LACCD Board of Trustees encouraging each district to utilize the leadership resources of the AIA|LA Board of Directors on how to most effectively move forward with each of their respective building programs.

Each districts' building program strengthens our communities with opportunities for better public education and ensures our region's ability to compete economically on the global stage. As LACCD and LAUSD work to revitalize their building programs, there is an excellent opportunity to further integrate the leadership of the architecture profession to help identify the most effective way forward.

We urge each district to hire District Architects as the next LAUSD Chief Facilities Executive and LACCD Director of Facilities Planning & Development to ensure he or she has the right set of qualifications to execute the next set of investments with the mastery and discipline that such an undertaking will most certainly demand. Those who manage the facilities capital investment program require the skills, technical capabilities, construction-management experience, equilibrium in judgment, values and interests that only those with training and experience in the real world of planning, design and construction can offer-in short, an architect.

Architects are uniquely qualified to embrace the full range of technical capabilities and possess the expertise required to execute large-scale capital improvement programs; and most importantly, possess the judgment to fulfill the greater agenda of realizing first-rate campuses and facilities for students, parents and communities. Architects are better qualified at managing the work because they have a comprehensive perspective of the entire planning, design and construction program.

AIA|LA looks forward to working with each district to ensure that our capital improvement programs benefit the public as widely as possible.
