AIA|LA Design Conference 2012: CHALLENGE HOW YOU DEFINE WHAT'S SALIENT IN TODAY'S DESIGN PRACTICE

Convention Center Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90015, USA

AIA|LA Design Conference 2012: Challenge what you define as salient in your design practice?

Are traditional architecture practices failing?

Will 99% of today's architecture grads ever even get to design a building?

For 2012, AIA|LA has programmed its annual Design Conference to recalibrate an architect's understanding of the potential for place and practice emerging from dramatic changes in technology and culture within a slowly recuperating economy. It is one thing for the profession to aspire to enhance social, cultural and economic value and another to take advantage of the new tools, strategies and opportunities required to achieve success. This symposium opens up discussion on how we can accelerate progress towards a healthier and more prosperous design practice.

The two-day session is organized as a series of moderated interactive panels and presentations representing varied and often diametric perspectives and degrees of experience. Day 1 sets the context by introducing key changes affecting the physical context and design approach to professional practice. Day 2 explores strategies to successfully implementing that innovation - from reshaping public policy to establishing new forms of architectural practice.

At the 2012 AIA|LA Design Conference, we will be searching for answers to questions such as:

  • How do culture and technology interact to introduce new ways of adding value at the scale of the city?
  • How can designers play a more meaningful role as collaborators and supporters in developing the criteria by which future directions in urban planning might be determined?
  • What key components define neighborhood these days?
  • Where does architecture count versus just ensuring the right mix of uses? How do community uses contribute to economic vitality?
  • What is the relationship between economic development for an area and less tangible factors?
  • What kind of resources and design methodology are clients looking for?
  • Where does the new technology take us relative to design quality and efficiency?
  • New architecture graduates bring a skillset that is new to most offices- how do you bridge the knowledge gap at both ends?
