AIA|LA Counts Down to the 2011 Design Awards Ceremony and Party presented by Italian Living Umbria with lee+mundwiler architects

The AIA|LA Design Awards countdown has begun! In honor of the event, AIA|LA will be sharing interviews, videos and editorials of the Presidential Honorees and of the Awards Party. Come back every Thursday from now until the October 26th event for more exciting coverage!

In this inaugural edition, catch-up with Presidential Honorees recipients, lee+mundwiler architects, receiving the Emerging Practice Award.

  • Tell us a bit about your practice...
As a small firm with less than 10, we work on a wide project spectrum from small single family homes to urban design, including research projects.

We are born to challenge, yet, believing in ourselves is our main challenge so far. In every design decision, we do put a conscious effort to get back to our base, who we are and what we are comfortable with. We consider ourselves as constant gardeners in our efforts. In this fast evolving time we are living in, we often test our approach and attitude of our design's to ensure that what we do is relevant and potent of innovation to our clients, people, and the society. Ironically, time only can tell. Hopefully, at the end of the day, we could converge our belief and knowledge into 'good' architecture.

  • What was your thought process when you learned you would be an AIA|LA Presidential Honoree as Emerging Practice of the Year?
"Huh?" It was a genuine surprise! We are happy that it was a validation from our peers that we've been doing OK.

  • In your opinion, what is an "emerging practice"?
For us, "emerging practice" means, works that have been recognized yet the practice's reputation has not been solidified.

  • What are future plans you have for your practice?
    Keep trying and keep doubting!

lee+mundwiler architects have two office locations, Basel Switzerland and Los Angeles, CA. Accordingly, their project locations are international and require mobility and flexibility.
