AIA|LA 2x8 Student Competition: Linking Emerging Talent to the Professional World

The 2x8 exhibitions have raised close to $100,000 in scholarship funds to support California design students. Since 2002, participating students have reaped the benefits of being a part of such a prestigious competition.
One such student is the 2010 2x8:Verge winner, Cody Glen. An architecture student entering his last year at Woodbury School of Architecture, Glen says, "The 2x8 Competition has helped spring board my architectural career, when I say I am exceptionally fortunate to have participated, I truly mean it."
Glen states that the mere preparation for the competition helped him mature as a designer. He spent an entire semester designing the project and then traveled to South America to finish the details. His result was the first prize winning, "Re.Cover," a water filtration and recovery building in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After it was all over, winning first place was the added bonus. The winnings helped to fund his education, and also helped him land his first job at R204 Design in Downtown Los Angeles from the publicity garnered by the competition.
The benefits of the 2x8 Student competition are not only for the winners, but also for all participants. Taking place at Dwell on Design at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Glen and the other participants had the opportunity to network with a much larger social and architectural world that included many like-minded and creative professionals, helping them make that leap from student to professional.
2x8 is an annual exhibition sponsored by AIA|LA, showcasing exemplary student work from architecture and design institutions throughout California. Each of the participating academic programs select two projects that demonstrate its core vision. The students' design work is judged by a noteworthy panel of architects and designers, who then announce the winners at the exhibition opening and convene in a forum to discuss the successful work.
The 2011 2x8:Source Student Exhibition will be on display beginning Saturday May 7th at the A+D Museum, 6032 Wilshire Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90036.
