LOS ANGELES, CA - For the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Spaceland from 12pm to 5pm. Sustainable Silver Lake, a local volunteer group, will be hosting "A Promise for the Planet" where local residents, business owners, school children, celebrities, and government officials, will publicly promise and pledge to adopt at least one more eco-friendly practice in their lives, such as giving up plastic bags, cycling to work, or using less water. These pledges will be video recorded and rebroadcasted online, streaming to the larger community of Los Angeles and beyond. This free event will be held in the parking lot of the popular local establishment Spaceland. LA internet radio station DubLAB will be DJing this event and coordinating the live webcast of pledges on their site www.dublab.com. KCRW's Anthea Raymond and actor Ross Marquand will be our MCs. Renowned local photographer Douglas Hill will be present to document the event. City Council President Eric Garcetti, John Ramey of KNX, and Frank Stoltze of KPCC have confirmed their attendance in helping our community make a promise to the planet.
Last year, Sustainable Silver Lake (formerly the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce Green Committee) held its Earth Day event in Triangle Park at Sunset Blvd. and Griffith Park Blvd., the location of the weekly Silver Lake Farmer's Market. Volunteers, along with local school children, teachers and local government officials, created a giant ball composed of over 7,000 plastic bags which represented the number of plastic bags that over 50 local businesses committed to not use in one month. The event received significant press coverage, including reports on KTLA (5), KABC (7), and KBS (Korean News, Channel 18). The Sustainable Silver Lake Earth Day Plastic Ball is now used as a traveling educational piece for local schools and Heal the Bay events throughout the Los Angeles area. Last December at the City of Los Angeles "Day Without A Plastic Bag" event, the ball grew to 5' in diameter with more than 40,000 bags, setting a world record. It will hopefully make an appearance, along with the 'Bag Monster', at this year's event.
For "A Promise for the Planet", visitors are encouraged to leave their cars at home and take alternative 'green' modes of transportation. Visitors can take advantage of Spaceland's central location and walk, ride their bikes and park them in the club's shiny new bike racks, or take bus 201 and get dropped off right in front of the event (or take busses 2, 4, or 704 and get dropped off at Sunset Blvd./Parkman Ave., just a short stroll from the event). Once at the event, visitors will be able to videorecord their promise, talk to local environmental experts about sustainable living, try some locally made sustainable snacks, visit nearby green businesses, and help make a change on Earth Day.
