The San Fernando Corridor:
To some, the City of Glendale's San Fernando Corridor is only an opportunity to avoid Interstate 5's rush hour traffic, to others, commuter or not, it is a textbook example of urban blight, of urban neglect. Then there are an imaginative few, who see opportunity, as well as promise, in revitalizing this short segment of Historic Route 99. Their vision of urban renewal, for a section of highway that in better days was called "The Main Street of California", is a demonstration of creative and innovative leadership. It is a fine example of a municipality's willingness to look beyond the obvious, beyond just thinking outside the box, to instead - "recreating the box", itself.

The San Fernando Corridor is one of the City of Glendale's two redevelopment project areas that is located in the western portion of the City and encompasses 750 acres, stretched along San Fernando Road for five miles, beginning with the City of Burbank in the north, then continuing south, to the City Los Angeles. By implementing creative and innovative leadership, along with harnessing the tools and resources of the Glendale Redevelopment Agency, the City intends to develop a creative media and design district that will provide economic growth for the community, while at the same time, also weave the arts into the fabric of the City.

Please join the Pasadena + Foothill AIA in welcoming this month's speaker, City Council Member Laura Friedman for a discussion about the revitalization of, and the possibilities for, the San Fernando Corridor. Learn about the City's vision to recreate their section of "California's Historic Main Street - Route 99", through the implementation of new zoning regulations that, will allow for the San Fernando Corridor to become a thriving creative environment for arts related businesses and housing. Ms. Friedman will discuss opportunities for architects, urban planners, developers, as well as, the creative community, to participate in, and to contribute to the revitalization of a blighted industrial area.
