DESIGN CHARRETTE - The Harlem Place Project: Integrating Small-Scale Urban Greenspace into Downtown

The Harlem Place Project: Integrating Small-Scale Urban Greenspace into Downtown

A team of graduate students from UC-Santa Barbara Bren School of Environmental Science & Management has been working with the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council (DLANC) Sustainability Committee to develop a small-scale open space calculator to quantify the environmental benefits of converting alleys into more sustainable interstitial open space. This tool will help the community understand the benefits of making small changes to our urban environment and we are specifically looking at Harlem Place, an alley located in the Historic Core of Downtown Los Angeles, as the focus of our pilot.

With this calculator, the students have developed two technical "scenarios" for the community to consider - one with minimal intervention but substantial environmental impact; second with major intervention for maximized benefits. The community needs your help in visualizing the physical impacts of these transformations. AECOM is hosting a design charrette on Thursday, January 14 and you are invited to participate in shaping the future vision of Harlem Place. For more information on the project, go online here.
