John E. Deasy was recently voted by the Los Angeles Board of Education to be the next superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Currently serving as the deputy superintendent, Deasy will officially take the top position on April 15, making him the fifth superintendent in a decade entrusted with directing the nation's second-largest public school district. Prior to joining LAUSD, Deasy served as deputy director of education at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and as superintendent of the Prince George's County Public Schools in Maryland, where he earned a national reputation for his leadership in significantly narrowing the achievement gap between low-income and minority students and their peers. During his time in Prince George's, Deasy also launched a pay-for-performance plan that made the district a national leader in efforts to reward teachers for gains in student achievement. Deasy also served as superintendent of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District in California and of the Coventry Public Schools in Rhode Island. Deasy has been a Broad Fellow, an Annenberg Fellow, and a State Superintendent of the Year.
