Political Outreach Committee

The Political Outreach Committee (POC) mission is to help establish a political voice for architects and perform leadership outreach to policy makers and elected officials on matters of importance to AIA|LA and its membership. The POC’s goals and objectives are to develop policy positions on matters related to the built environment, urban design, and the practice of architecture. The POC can serve both as a catalyst that initiates new policy and as an advocate and advisor that encourages and promotes proposed City policies already in development.

Strategies for achieving these goals include: Develop relationships and dialogue with policy makers and elected officials through annual Legislative Day; Continue to contact, schedule, and follow up on meetings with key City officials throughout the year; Reinforce relationships and outreach through Breakfast Receptions and other hosted events; Advocate for AIA members to be appointed to Boards and Commissions; and Filter issues and actions brought forward to the Chapter by its members and act in an advisory capacity to the Board on potential actions to take.

The POC fulfills its mission through six primary functions that include:

  • Annual Legislative Day at LA City Hall;
  • Breakfast Series of roundtable receptions with key civic leaders;
  • Quarterly Urban Design Review Meetings with Department of City Planning;
  • Quarterly Building Code Interpretation Meetings with Department of Building and Safety;
  • Quarterly Development Reform Meetings with BIA, BOMA, DCP and LADBS; and
  • Advocacy Roundtables that are programmed around hot button issues.

The primary goal of the POC is to review and influence policies and regulations that impact the built and natural environments. To help implement this goal, the POC works closely with additional AIA|LA committees, including the Committee on the Environment (COTE), Urban Design Committee (UDC), Building Performance & Regulations Committee (BPR), Practice Committee and the Historic Resources Committee (HRC).

The POC meets regularly on the second Tuesday of each month and all AIA|LA members are welcome to attend. By contributing pro-actively to the discussion, volunteers help the committee develop a legislative agenda for the Chapter, which forms the thesis of the annual Legislative Day at City Hall. In addition to scheduling meetings with Council Members, Planning Deputies, the Mayor's Office and numerous General Managers and Directors of the vast array of City departments, the POC works closely with key staff members in the Los Angeles Department of Building & Safety, LADOT, the Planning Department, LADWP, LAWA and Bureau of Engineer/ Public Works.
