Waterproofing Issue

Regarding the waterproofing manufacturer you noted, I have only had personal experience on one project (in CT) and while I did not have a negative experience I must note that there were no hydrostatic conditions (vertical, below grade)or soil / groundwater contamination concerns that tasked the system to any great degree. I do have personal experience on many projects where cold fluid applied systems have been installed. If a given system is a tested (i.e. - ASTM) assembly and has a proven track record of sucessful installations (with conditions similar to the project where it is being submitted for installation) then the system itself (cold fluid applied) compared to, for example, hot rubberized asphalt or sheet membrane may not necessarily be catagorized as "not as good", "as good" or "better", etc - but simply that it is a tested assembly with a proven track record and from a financially established manufacturer that may be appropriate for a given project. What is then also important, as with any system, is the experience of the applicator. This applies to sheet membrane or hot / cold fluid applied. Experience being defined as a proven track record of sucessful (documented) installations. Whether cold fluid applied or hot fluid applied, the manufacturer should be tasked to produce, in writing, the recommended (and perhaps it should be stressed - what was the moisture content of the concrete substrates when testing took place of these systems?)moisture content of the concrete substrate. Simply waiting 14 days once concrete is placed to install a given system does not mean that the moisture content is at an acceptable level. The moisture content can be tested (not simply plastic sheet method but a more precise test method / testing equipment) to verify if it is within the recommended percentage before installation begins. Field adhesion tests can also be performed to further verify this. Field adhesion testing can also take place once the membrane is installed and before backfill / overburden is placed. Despite what a manufacturer may claim there are ASTM, ACI and other "good practices" that can be used as guidelines. This includes surface preparation such as per ASTM D5295. There are also other things to consider. The manufacturer that you noted has printed literature that references ASTM D6769. These guidelines should be reviewed. The same manufacturer also notes soil condition requirements such as acid / alkaline levels. I would recommend that on any project the site soil and water is tested and the test report forwarded to the manufacturer for review and acceptance. This applies to not only cold fluid applied membranes but sheet membrane and including bentonite systems. As part of my firms standards, our specifications note such and including that such testing take place before waterproofing bids are recieved and accepted so that the installer / mfgr. can clearly note that project specific water / soil conditions are condusive to the use of their system. We also specify that the goetech / soils report is required to be reviewed before bids are accepted and the installer / mfgr. note in writing that they reviewed those reports and again, their membrane can function per project specific conditions. I may not have answered your question directly and if I had more time I would be more detailed but I hope that I have noted at least some items that can be reviewed in the context of the potential use of the cold fluid applied membrane system on your project.

if you haven't already, i'd refer to the ICC Acceptance Criteria relevant to your product & application...in this case i believe it would be AC29 (http://www.icc-es.org/criteria/pdf_files/AC29.pdf). that document (freely available) should be a good starting point for relatively in-depth vetting of the product you are considering, as well as any other candidates. also, you can simply request copies of various manufacturer's acceptance criteria listing number...which would give you positive proof that the given manufacturer has "done their homework" - and good spot to turn to for additional information on their product. i hope that's not re-treading the tire for you. ...hope that's useful! good luck! -seth
