"Your Contract: Friend or Foe?" - A review of key contract risks, how to manage your liability exposure, and avoiding working for free

Learning Units:  1.5 LUs (60 minute presentation plus Q&A)

Seminar Summary:

From the start of your project to the very last payment, your contracts control your legal obligations and rights. This seminar will help you identify the dangerous legal terms that create additional exposure and hinder your rights to payment, how to respond to these risks, and how to make sure your sub-consultants share the risks you have to take.


Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will learn to understand the terms in the AIA contract documents
  • Understand how contract terms, including copyright, are interpreted and applied by the legal system
  • Recognize favorable contract provisions and how to incorporate key provisions into your standard terms and conditions
  • Gain insight on how to shrink risk and manage the contract risk that remains

Speaker(s) Biography:

Ryan Kohler, is a partner at the law firm of Collins Collins Muir + Stewart. Ryan works extensively with design professionals in the architecture and engineering world on  business disputes, contracts, and professional liability defense. He has successfully defended design professionals from claims in trials, arbitrations, and administrative hearings. 

Brian Stewart, Hon. AIA,  is a senior partner at the law firm of Collins Collins Muir + Stewart. Brian has defended numerous architects and engineers in trials, arbitrations, and administrative hearings. He is an affiliate member of the AIA|LA and of ACEC, and has published numerous articles to help design professionals, and worked on countless architectural contracts over his career.
