AIA|LA Iconic LA Tours: Case Study House 8 - The Eames House

June 4, 2016. 10AM to 12PM.

Pacific Palisades, CA

This tour has sold out!

The Eames Foundation is excited to offer an intimate “kit-of-parts” style experience of Case Study House #8:
·         The visit has been designed exclusively for the AIA.  The site will be closed to the public during the AIA visit.
·         During this special private exterior tour, Eames Foundation staff and docents will discuss the evolution of the design of the Eames House and its context within the Case Study House program.
·         Visitors will also have the opportunity for a behind the scenes Q&A about our 250 Year Project to conserve the site.
·         A copy of the working drawings will be made available for viewing as well as examples of the catalogues from which parts for the Eames House were ordered.

Normally visitors are welcomed and give a very brief synopsis of the history of the house and then are turned loose on the site to wander as they see fit.  The AIA tour will have a number of staff and docents to help with descriptions and answer questions.

In addition to this specialized information, guests will be encouraged to experience the Eames House not just as a structure, but as a home defined by a series of fluid relationships between architecture, its contents and site. The two hour visit will give visitors the opportunity to explore the grounds at their own pace—to take in the view from the bluff, observe the dynamic play of light and shadow patterns, and take in the feel of the sea air and the smell of the eucalyptus trees. In the Eameses’ own words, “This house—in its free relation to the ground, the trees, the sea—with constant proximity to the whole vast order of nature acts as a re-orientor and ‘shock absorber’ and should provide the needed relaxations from the daily complications arising within problems.”

Charles and Ray Eames designed and built the Eames House in 1949. Known as Case Study House No. 8, it is one of the most widely recognized homes built under Arts & Architecture magazine’s seminal program.

The Eameses moved into their home on Christmas Eve 1949, and lived there for the rest of their lives. The interior, with its collection of furniture and objects, remains very much the way it was during the designers’ lifetimes. Now a National Historic Landmark, the Eames House is an iconographic structure visited by people from all over the world. Its charm and appeal is perhaps best expressed by Charles who said that, "At all times love and discipline have led to a beautiful environment and a good life."

The Eames House is open to the public today thanks to the foresight of Ray Eames, the stewardship of the Eameses’ daughter Lucia Eames, and Lucia’s five children. In 2004, Lucia Eames established a not-for-profit organization: the Charles and Ray Eames House Preservation Foundation, Inc. (also known as the “Eames Foundation”), to preserve and protect the Eames House and to provide educational experiences that celebrate the creative legacy of Charles and Ray.
