How do Architects live? How do architects design for themselves?

By demand from our tour goers, AIA Los Angeles (AIA|LA) is kicking off a new Tour series, “How Architects Live.” Our members open up their own residences to show the public how an architect lives in their own space.

“We usually feature projects designed by our members for clients, but in order to understand an architects true design aesthetics,” states, AIA|LA Associate Director, Carlo Caccavale, Hon. AIA|LA, “we thought having them open the doors to their own homes would explain what moves an architect in his designs and personal life.”

For this first tour in the series, Sarah Graham, FAIA of agps architecture opens up her home in the Hollywood Hills called Experimental House. The house was featured in The Architectural Review in 1994 with a vintage photograph taken by Julius Schulman; it is located on a steep piece of land under the D of the Hollywood sign. The house explores a dialog between typical residential construction and a precision of means expressed through structure and minimal enclosure.

On an “unbuildable” site, the intention was to design a small house that would not feel the limitations of its area. The roof has been separated from the vertical wall enclosure: spatially, the lid floats over the box. Tapered steel beams are pin connected to a steel frame embedded within the front wall with tension cables holding the roof in balance.
