HOUSING & NEIGHBO(U)RHOODS - a roundtable conversation about a tale of two cities:  Los Angeles & Chengdu, China
Please join us for an architectural peer conversation tracing and reflecting the experiences across two cities on housing and neighbourhood architecture. What are the political, economical, environmental and social drivers underpinning new architecture? What is truly ‘new’ about it?  And what are the lessons learned along the way?
As a roundtable, we will discuss:  Public housing, Private Housing and Neighborhoods,  a human experience of space,  our cities need for housing and most of all, a conversation about design excellence in architecture.

Sara Groesbeck - omgivning: architects, interior designers, urbanists
With a diverse 15 years of experience in design, construction administration and project management on multiple scale and type projects, Sara's motivation has been singular, to reinvigorate the spirit of buildings in neglect and to impact the experience of those who will reinhabit them.  Starting out in the Detroit area where she received her B.S. and Masters in Architecture at Lawrence Tech she drew inspiration from the landscape of blighted and defunct historic structures that were once exceptional and bold.  While there she worked to convert the Lofts at Rivertown complex, its central tower an addition by Albert Kahn, into 178 privately owned lofts.  She was committed to ensuring that each space was an individually realized vision of its purchaser.

Sara relocated to Los Angeles in 2006 and while working for the development firm Creative Environments of Hollywood she helped to envision the adaptive reuse of multiple industrial warehouses into live-work artist communities. Of those were Westmoreland Lofts and Lacy Studio Lofts.  These projects implemented the use of unconventional materials and applications that articulate unique spaces and experience.

Now at Omgivning Architects Sara is thrilled to be a part of the revitalization of downtown LA.  She is currently working to bring an adaptive reuse live-work project to skid row while also working on the restoration and renovation of the historic Broadway Trade Center.  On BTC Sara is involved in the complex rooftop addition that includes multiple penthouses, two pools, an urban farm and a community plaza/stage event space.

John Friedman, FAIA - Principal, John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects

With over 30 years of experience in the field of architecture, John co-founded JFAK in 1996. John was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he studied hard, played water polo harder (3-time NCAA D3 All-American), and observed the social upheavals of the 60’s and 70’s. He’s since traded in his Speedo for a road bike, his text books for a sketch book, and the Beatles for Radiohead, but he still does his best to marry his love of work with a never-ending quest for the perfect taco and the perfect beach. He was elevated to the Fellowship of the American Institute of Architects in 2007.
