The LEED Gold-certified Life Sciences Building at Loyola Marymount University is a modern teaching facility for biology, chemistry and natural science. A variety of collaborative environments promote connectivity and openness. The program includes undergraduate teaching and research labs, student-supported faculty research labs, classrooms, conference space, offices, shared public spaces, a 280-seat auditorium, and a subterranean parking structure. The project objectives of achieving interdisciplinary collaboration, sustainability, and connectivity informed the design process, resulting in a prominent campus building that serves as a teaching tool for sustainable practices and other learning experiences through “science on display”. Built to the street-side property line, the Life Sciences Building establishes an urban presence, and the design creates an animated courtyard and gardens. A green roof rises three levels, continuing the courtyard presence and further engaging pedestrians.
