We have all worked on LEED projects and have filled out the MR credit sheets for the construction and demolition diversion points. On many of these projects we take the 2 points available for 75% diversion as a given and move on with the point tally, but what is really recycled from a commercial interior renovation project? How is that diversion really calculated? What materials can be recovered for re-use? The amount of debris is staggering, and the diverted materials are not always what you think they would be.

The tour of the Construction and Demolition Recycling Inc. Material Recovery Facility and Donation Center will show you a side of diversion you have never seen before and will make clear the benefits and problems associated with the commercial interior construction and demolition waste stream.

Learning Objectives:
1. Learn how construction and demolition diversion is quantified and tracked
2. Learn what can and cannot be recycled from commercial interior projects
3. Learn how materials from commercial interior construction and demolition projects can affect the environment when not diverted from landfills
4. Learn how many materials found in commercial interior projects can be given a second life through donation
5. Learn how Architects can enhance diversion with the new recycling requirements
