Citizen Jane: Battle for the City

Friday, April 28th
Nuart Theatre, 11272 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90025

On April 28th at the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles, Matt Tyrnauer will release his new film, Citizen Jane, an important and timely story about author and urban activist Jane Jacob’s taking on the tyrannical master builder Robert Moses in 1950s and 60s New York City. This overlooked chapter in New York’s history is a beautifully told, inspiring, and historic example of successful grassroots mobilization and social activism.  Robert Hammond, co-founder of Friends of the High Line, is a producer on the film, which was, funded in part with grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, Ford Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, the Knight Foundation and the Blue Moon Foundation.  The film highlights the story of Jacobs, an urban activist and the author of the classic The Death and Life of Great American Cities. She stood up to seemingly indomitable city planners and was a galvanizing force in saving cherished New York neighborhoods such as SoHo and Greenwich Village.  She was a pioneering community organizer who spoke truth to power.
