The 2017 AIA|LA CITY LEADERS BREAKFAST SERIES serves as an opportunity for architects & designers and other community stakeholders to meet directly with key individuals transforming Los Angeles in a roundtable setting to discuss innovative ideas that will ensure a healthy, sustainable and economically competitive future.

Josef Bray-Ali

Candidate - Council District #1, City of Los Angeles

Josef “Joe” Bray-Ali is a candidate for Los Angeles City Council in the 1st District. He is running for city council to ensure a responsive council office and the delivery of basic city services.

Joe lives in Lincoln Heights with his wife and young daughter. He owns a small business in Cypress Park, the Flying Pigeon LA bike shop, and founded the Bike Oven, a community bike repair co-op. His platform addresses many small scale problems residents and businesses face. These issues range from dangerous streets to a hostile permitting system for small business and property owners.

Additionally, Joe wants to work in cooperation with stakeholders and elected officials on the large issues in our district: trash dumping, the workforce and affordable housing crisis, community planning, protecting open space, and homelessness.

Joe was born and raised in Los Angeles. After graduating from UC Santa Barbara, Joe worked as a field deputy for California state assemblymember Rudy Bermudez.  He has served on the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council and has worked in the real estate construction industry as a project manager.

Joe’s community work started more than a decade ago in his Highland Park garage, which he repurposed as a bike repair collective that he called the ‘Bike Oven.’ The workshop brought people together to share expertise and tools, with an each-one-teach-one philosophy.

Joe has been on the forefront advocating for safe streets for over a decade in North East Los Angeles; most recently with the ‘Figueroa For All’ campaign to bring pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements to the North Figueroa corridor.

Joe is probably best known for his passionate advocacy for safer streets in District 1. The first community meeting to establish the ‘Figueroa For All’ campaign, which advocates for greater pedestrian and bicycle safety on North Figueroa, met in his shop in 2009. Working with neighbors and friends, Joe brought the fight for safe streets to city hall and countless community meetings.

Small Business – Flying Pigeon LA

For nearly a decade, Joe has owned and operated the Flying Pigeon LA bicycle shop on North Figueroa. Joe has kept his doors open through tough economic times. By hosting events and meetings, he has turned his shop into a community space in a neighborhood that needs more of it.

He has had to do it all: selling and repairing bicycles; doing the bookkeeping; cleaning the floors; and chasing down loose ball bearings.

Like all small business owners in Los Angeles, Joe has had to deal with the tremendous strain that local, state, and federal agencies place on small business. He will be there for small business owners in this district, and in the city – to support the people that pay more than their fair share of the costs of local government.
