AIA|LA Urban Design Committee :: May 2014

When: Wednesday, May 14, 2014
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Melendrez, 617 S Olive St 11 floor, Los Angeles, CA 90014

In the Urban Design Committee’s continued effort to identify and advocate for urban design opportunities throughout Los Angeles, we are pleased to announce out upcoming meeting at the offices of Meléndrez in Downtown L.A.

Melani Smith, Principal of urban design at Meléndrez will give an update on the Broadway Dress Rehearsal project, a temporary plaza and street reconfiguration project along the historic Broadway corridor in Downtown Los Angeles. Melani will also present the MANGo project, a neighborhood greenway in Santa Monica that used pop-up tactics to engage community members in the process, which included a temporary installation of improvements in the street at the Pop-Up MANGo festival and happening with over 400 attendees.

The committee will also continue our conversation about the Urban Design Opportunities Atlas. At this meeting we will hear updates and discuss the following two topics:

  • Improving Pedestrian Crosswalk Safety, Lissy Ziesing and Maryal Peter
  • Finding synergies in LA’s “Great Green People Streets and Alleys,” Alex Anamos and Ian Dickenson
If you would like to become involved in any of these groups please email me at mleitner@tortigallas.com.

Over the next few UDC meetings we will schedule two to three topics for each meeting for presentation and discussion. This will provide you the opportunity to engage with the committee and the topics as these shape into AIA/LA positions. Our next UDC meeting will be on Wednesday, May 14th at 7pm in Downtown LA. We will send out additional information on the meeting in the coming days.
