Jeff Matsuno was born in Los Angeles but the catalyst for his art was his residency in Italy where he learned to appreciate the textural and tonal beauty and archeological interest inherent in the centuries old architecture.  He lived and worked in Italy for over seven years, mostly in Venice.  Since his return to Los Angeles he has explored different facets of the L.A. cityscape, most recently the iconic locales of Hollywood’s golden age.  In reflecting on his attachment to the city he felt the significance of the aura that Hollywood has exerted internationally for most of its short (compared to Italy) history.  Unlike the Italian subjects some of the Hollywood pieces were constructed using historic photographs because the original structures have been demolished. In all his work the artist strives to communicate not only the personality of the original architecture, but also the richness that the passage of time confers.
